What sets this museum apart from many others is the commentary that accompanies the pieces. Covering European art from medieval to early twentieth century, the descriptions provide the viewer with the right context for real appreciation of the work. There is a lot to see here, and you have the time, I'd recommend doing it in two days to avoid museum fatigue. Make sure to visit the museum shop.

The best museum in the city for fine art lovers. The Wallraf-Richartz specializes in works from around the 1500s, as well as French and Dutch Old Masters and more modern German and French work (up to about 1900). The highlight though is the extensive collection of medieval Cologne paintings as well as the Impressionists. With detailed descriptions of not only the artists but also the time periods in which they worked, this is a beautiful educational lesson in old European art.

This is a beautiful fine arts museum, certainly one of the best museums I visited in the city. One of the nicest things about the museum was that in each room there was an explanation of the period of time and the cultural background of the artists. Everything is in German and English. I could have well spent the whole day here - there is so much to see.
