Description
Founded in 1971, Christiania is an anarchic part of Denmark. It was set up as a direct result of the student uprisings of the 1960s. Today, Christiania is home to some 750 outsiders and is a free ... Read more
city, which means that it is not part of the city, the country, or the European Union. It is a lively place and there are always lots of activities happening. One of the original ideas was to have a car-free town, but nowadays the inhabitants have trouble finding parking spaces outside the district because of the multitude of tourist buses. Visitors should be aware that the sale of drugs is legal here, and that dogs run around the streets freely.

If you have an interest in alternative culture, don't miss out on a visit to Christiania. Copenhagen's independent community was established in 1971 when an abandoned military area was overtaken by squatters. It's a ramshackle little town that is home to lots of colorful street art, eco-friendly houses, vegetarian cafes and stalls selling hippie paraphernalia. There are also some excellent music venues including Jazzklubben, a small jazz bar which has live music throughout the week and open mic sessions on a Sunday. Christiania's main through fare, Pusher Street, has a notorious reputation for drug dealing and the vibe can be a little edgy - tourists are advised not to take photographs. Being a hippie at heart, I really enjoyed this creative and non-conformist enclave, but it's not for everyone.

Everyone was friendly and welcoming. Such a different place; there is nothing likely this place.

Quiet south of downtown neighborhood, Christiania is a unique place to visit. Christiania is a real experience, hippy-ish area with colorful murals and outdoor sculptures.

this is an extremely cool area in Copenhagen! There is so much art and such good energy I would definitely recommend visiting. However I do not consider this a good family spot due to the high concentration of drugs (marijuana) that is casually sold, as it has been a hotspot for this since the 60's.

Most of Copenhagen feels a lot like Amsterdam, Christiania actually behaves like it. Charming, distinct and a world unto itself. Kind of hippie commune of sorts. A visit to the "Green Light Zone" is an experience you will not soon forget.

This hippy commune is one of a kind...walk through the gates into a different world. There are parts where you can't take pictures so pay attention to the signs as you check out this unique vibrant area.

Local from Copenhagen

Christiania is a free town located in Copenhagen. People live freely and dogs do run wild. There are bar that allow indoor smoking that usually sell different teas and non alcoholic drinks. Vendors sell various smoking apparatus. In addition, many may sell drugs (hash, different strains of marijuana) but it is not legal. There are times when the police will come in and confiscate the drugs that are being sold and arrest the vendors. Therefore if someone makes an illegal purchase they should be wary when exiting the town because at time the police are patrolling outside the area. Apart from that there is a collection of artwork in the form of graffiti and murals displayed throughout the town. Pictures are forbidden in the town. Frequently you can find small bonfires happening out of large barrels at night. The inhabitants are relatively friendly and will have small talk with the visitors.

You can walk around Christiania and get a feel for it. Feels a bit run down in comparison with the rest of Copenhagen.

Christiania is Freetown and is autonomous neighbourhood of about 850 residents. Personally I didn't really like that, but have to admit this is place which people should visit.

Christiania is a free state in middle of Copenhagen. It`s full of hippies and artists. It`s weird and it`s unique. Make sure you spend some time in this place. Even better on summer weekends.

Christiania is well worth a visit to experience a completely different lifestyle than the one on next-door Copenhagen. Aficionado architecture with some very original designs, veggie food, run-down buildings, street art and discarded items scattered around make a big contrast to the clean, organized and predictable Copenhagen.
Watch where you are going, as there are no street signs and you might get lost. Also, no photos on Pusher St, their infamous venue where they sell hash and marihuana, which feels safe enough during the day.
Overall, it is an interesting experience but it might feel a bit depressing at times and there is not much to do.

One of a kind Christiania is a free state located within the city of Copenhagen. Most well-known for the colorful people and hippie vibe people come from all over Europe to see this truly unique village in a city. It was a bit rough tough because in many places the skinheads have replaced the hippies and control the green light district.

My visit to Christiania was kind of weird. I went there in December. Everything was pretty much closed up. I hung out in a coffee shop for a while and then walked around. Even though I heard so much about it being a free territory and really artsy and edgy, in actuality all I saw was just a bunch of people hanging out around a bon fire smoking hash. Those who weren't smoking hash were buying or selling it. Kind of lame. However, it is a unique place and I would give it another chance if I returned to Copenhagen.

Christiania, also known as Freetown, is an "alternative community" founded in 1971 in an old military barracks. It is occupied by many free spirits and is an interesting experience to visit. There are only three rules in Christiania: no photos, no running, and have fun.

Christiana is a collectively run 'hippie' village within the city and represents one of the biggest tourist attractions in town. It was founded around 1970 and there are more or less too inhabitants. It has its own rules and is really a strange "island" in Copenaghen. The Government has been trying to remove it.

My experience there resembled a David Lynch movie... and not, I did not do drugs.

As bit on the eclectic side but everyone seemed welcoming as we wandered around enjoying the graffiti art. Very photogenic area worth a visit. Beautifully crafted scarves and other items for sale if you want to support the independent, retro-feeling community.

Very Very Very interesting. Yes it is very seedy. All the tour books said to take a tour. What is there to tour. We walked around, there are several artist studios, many bakeries not the kind that you would stop in and have coffee at. And although the tour books say that the people are not welcoming, they actually are very friendly.

I love this place! But I could not live here! haha Do not only walk around in the entrance area, where they sell drugs and stuff ( illegally of course ), but continue to the living areas and on the other side of the little lake. Relax and be gentle! :) Yeah, do not miss out the coffee/restaurant place with vegetarian soup of the day! Use to taste delicious!
