The tropical downpours usually only last for a few hours in the afternoon, so you can get all of your sightseeing and canopy tours done in the morning and afterward relax in your jungle cabana, watching the life-giving rain fall over the vibrantly green plant life around you.

An easy destination to visit solo, there were "no areas where I felt unsafe… roads were the most dangerous part." Being generally "respectful of the culture" is important as in any country, but there was "no need for heightened safety precautions."

I absolutely loved Costa Rica. Every where you went, people were so kind and helpful. 90% of the population speaks English which is so incredibly helpful. The environment is beautiful and the hikes are outstanding. They have such incredible choices of things to do, from horse back riding to zip lining 600 feet above the forest floor. The beaches arent incredibly crowded and absolutely breathtaking. The water so so blue, almost crystal clear.

I have lived in Costa Rica since 2009, and am lucky enough to work in the travel industry. I've personally been to over 100 hotels, resorts and villas in the country. The most highly promoted areas (Manuel Antonio, La Fortuna/Arenal Volcano and Guanacaste), they are all great for a first trip. They are comfortable for travelers and offer conveniences like restaurants, grocery stores, medical offices, etc.

For those interested in something off the beaten path, I cannot recommend enough a trip out to the Nicoya Peninsula (surfer, yoga, wellness-vibe) and the Osa Peninsula (absolute jungle, wildlife, adventure-destination).

Guanacaste is an incredibly special place, but I encourage you to visit in the 'rainy season' (June - November) so that we have received at least a little bit of rain. If you come to Guanacaste during the dry months, it is a dustbowl. During the rainy months, you will get an afternoon shower here and there, and the most incredible sunsets following the rain.

Costa Rica is famous for its small boutique hotels. Get out of your comfort zone here. Marriotts and Hiltons are wonderful, but to get a unique experience here you really want to go boutique.

I highly recommend visiting Costa Rica if you ever have a chance. The people are lovely, warm and friendly. The outdoor experience is out of this world from the diverse terrain, coffee plantations and farms to city life and exploring the rich culture you won't be disappointed or ever bored.

It's so green! Costa Rica was my first exposure to Latin America, and it did not disappoint. Whether you come for the beach or the rainforest (or both), you will have a great time. I've not yet heard of anyone that's left unhappy. Because of the government-subsidized universities, the general population is well educated, and this is why many global companies base their Latin American expansions here. So, you can imagine the country's trajectory.
