The Parque Calderon is the heart of the old (El Centro) city. One of the tourist offices is located on the south side as well as the jump off for the open air bus rides around town. Pick up a ticket from the woman on the curb in front of the Old Cathedral (the small church directly across from the "new" imposing cathedral with the domes) and she will point you to the North side of the Parque where you pick up the bus. it is a great way to get to know the city.

If there are any festivals going on, The Parque Calderon is the most likely place to see the action.

What can one say? Absolutely the heart of Cuenca! Beautiful and peaceful with something going on constantly. Surrounded by restaurants and coffee shops, the Old Cathedral (and decommissioned). Be sure to read The Mapmaker's Wife (we'll try to put a copy in the library). Learn about la Condamine and his expediiton, but more about Isobel his indominable wife. Great, great read about a woman who walked across South America when almost all of her expedition perished.

Speaking of history, read a bit about Adbon Calderon whose statue graces the park. He is the greatest hero (Cuencan, at least) in the war of liberation from Spain.

Park Abdon Calderon is the centre square in the heart of Cuenca. It’s a great place to people watch, and we would often eat an ice-cream on a bench here and watch life pass us by. During certain festivals, like Corpus Christi, the square becomes even livelier at night when the locals let off huge fireworks. Be careful though – don’t stand too close! Both the old and new cathedrals front on to the square, making it an even prettier place to admire.
