Walk up and down this river and take a different set of stairs to get to different parts of old of town and explore. Never disappoints!

What can I say? This is the main reason we bought where we did and when we did. The river is visible from the two balconies and from the master bedroom. Beautiful and always changing from dark green to turbulent brown and all the colors between.

Walk out the back gate (don't forget your key card) and stroll either left or right along the cobble pathways where you may meet indigenous fishing or washing their week's laundry. To the right is Otorongo Plaza, perhaps 15 minutes away. At the holiday season there are gigantic holy family statues that look more like arrivals from outer space all glittery silver and lit at night by a million fairy lights.

To the left out the back gate and along the river are bridges (including the Puente Roto or broken bridge where there may be artwork for sale) and further along, the Pumapungo Gardens/Museum. Lovely walk: watch for bicycles.

The problem with many towns in South America is that they don’t have good walking paths. This makes it difficult if you want to explore the cities on foot. Cuenca does not have this problem. Not only are there many footpaths throughout the city, but the river – Rio Tomebamba – which runs through it has a well-maintained footpath on either side. It’s a picturesque place to walk or go for a run and I’d recommend taking a stroll along the river while you’re in town.
