Curitiba Vacations

Atypical for Brazilian cities in almost every way, the capital of the state of Paraná has developed an international reputation for sustainable development. With one of the highest standards of living in the country and home to its first university, Curitiba is considered by “Grist” as the 3rd most “Green City” in the world and played host to the ... 2006 U.N. Convention on Biodiversity. The city takes an active stance towards protecting its historic buildings from modern developers and is unique in emphasizing pedestrian and bus transportation over the use of cars. The result is a foot-friendly and safe downtown with few signs of the extremes in wealth that too often shape other parts of Brazil. Stroll through the French-inspired Curitiba Botanical Gardens, take in a show at the impressive Wire Opera House, and enjoy a plethora of restaurants inspired by the city's European, Arab and Japanese immigrants. Curitiba's one major detraction from a touristic standpoint is that, as pleasant as it is, it may come off a bit bland to first time visitors. Nevertheless, for Brazilians and ex-pats alike, it is considered amongst the best places to live in the country.

Local from Curitiba

This is my hometown and I simply love it! It has all the comfort from a big capital city, with more european style and culture, as many immigrants stablished here (italians, germans, ucranians, polish). Lots of options for eating and going out.
Cost of living is not the highest nor the lowest in the country, but considering the conversion rate from USD to BRL being U$1 to R$4, it gets pretty affordable to live here with good comfort. Expats and students usually live in Champagnat/Agua Verde areas, which are close enough to downtown, close to all services and easy to use public transportation if needed. Rent can be a bit more expensive in this area, but it's possible to find some affordable places, like studios closer to downtown or older buildings in those areas. A single person can live comfortably with about U$1000/month (BRL 4,000), and a couple would require some U$300 more.
The city has lots of green areas, many parks, being Parque Barigui the most popular. Many people go there everyday, and specially on weekends, for exercising or just hanging out with friends.
Lifestyle is getting healthier every year, which includes many services and products related to well being. It can get a bit dangerous in downtown and some other neighboorhoods, specially at night. Downtown is not recommended for living.
Temperature vary accordingly to season. During winter (june-august) it can get as low as 0 Celcius degress, up to 20 C, and during summer, from 18 to 35 degrees. Srping and Autumn have mild temperatures, but in the past years it's getting hotter, from 15 to 26 degrees. It rains a lot, especially during winter.
Curitiba is surrounded by smaller towns which offer a range of outdoor activities such as trekkings, horseback riding, rapel, climbing, mountaineering, waterfalls, and only 1h30 from the coast. The best beach is "Ilha do Mel" (Honey Island), where no cars are allowed and atmosphere is very relaxed and happy. Many surfers go there, as well as young people looking for some nature related fun.

Awesome city with up to 35 parks and almost 100 miles of bicycle paths conecting these parks!

It's also a rich city in architecture, culture and gastronomy and it's possible to know a lot of different places riding a rental bike or in a guided Bike tour.

One weekend is way to short to explore all the secrets about Curitiba.

I´ve been living in Ctba for the past 5 years. I´ll tell u, I won´t move again! This is the nicest city in Brazil, one of the most enviromental concious city in the world. It´s beautiful clean, great imigrant mixture, the weather is a little fuzzy (it rains a lot, and is cool most of the year). Lots of parks, sightseeing, museuns, huge shopping malls, lots of restaurants with italian and japanese (but not limited to we have great ethnicity here in Ctba). Come visit us!

Curitiba is a great town. I spent 2 weeks there for the 8th Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP8) and just loved it. The people of this Brazilian city were warm, welcoming and the perfect hosts for such a large, international event. I especially enjoyed all of the great churrascarias and cachaçarias in town. I would never have imagined there was so many ways to eat meat and sip the Brazilian equivalent of jet fuel. I think I may have been a South American cowboy in a past life? Another great activity was taking the old time train across the Mata Atlantica, to the Atlantic coast - gorgeous!
