Devon, Somerset and Cornwall Vacations

First populated by the Celts, Cornwall has an entirely different feel than the rest of England. It's no wonder. Many inhabitants here didn't speak English until the 18th century, when the Queen's English replaced Cornish. To this day, you'll see signs of Cornish pride everywhere, from bilingual signage to men in Cornish kilts. These days, visiting ... Read more
Cornwall is a quirky mix of salt-water taffy beach towns, dramatic cliffs and ancient archaeology, from Celtic stones to King Arthur's supposed castle ruins at Tintagel. Further east, you'll find Devon, one of the most geographically fascinating regions in England. From lunar-like moors to isolated beaches, and thatched-roof cottages to tea houses serving scones with decadent Devonshire cream, Devon offers a world of sights and things to do. Capping it off before you reach the Cotswolds is Somerset, a hilly land that could double for the Shire in the Lord of the Rings and is famous for its cider. Some of the highlights on the peninsula include the space-aged botanical garden Eden Project, the Gothic cathedral of student-dominated Exeter and the dramatic scenery at Land's End.

If I wanted to go mountain climbing, but stroll on a beach the same day, this would be without a doubt the place to come. Such a beautiful place.

Rural England captured in old fashioned glory, look up Padstow 'obby 'oss,, helston floral dance, Minack Theater, and Eden just to start.

Visited lots of towns and villages in the West country connected with ancestors. Fantastic, though the roads are a little narrow!

Cornwall is like the end of the world, in a good way. Go far enough west on the British headland and you will find an area of storybook quality. Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.

Although I love the cities in England (Manchester, Bristol, London, etc), there is just something about the fields, villages and spectacular ocean views from the Cornwall peninsula. A car is almost essential, as the best part of the area is hunting for the most beautiful remote villages and beaches.
