This historic train has been taking excursions through Colorado's most beautiful high-country since 1882, carrying passengers behind vintage steam locomotives through the breathtakingly scenic San Juan National Forest. Relive the sights and sounds of yesteryear for a spectacular journey on board the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

It's not just a museum. The D&S Narrow Gauge Railroad runs between Durango and the historic mining town of Silverton.
It travels through the spectacular Animus River Canyon in the heart of the San Juan Mountains

This is a cool place to check out, whether you ride the train or not. It's full of old equipment, and exhibits about the history of the D&SNGR and of Durango.

Had a wonderful time taking the train from Durango to Silverton. Rode in the first class car which included some extras, like a souvenir cup and tote bag. The scenery is stunning, so make sure to bring your camera.

Ride the train at any time of the year to really get inside the beauty of our mountains. Ride one way and take the bus home; take your backpack and get off at Elk Park, or ride the seasonal trains such as the Pumpkin Patch, or the Polar Express!

One of the great narrow gauge train rides in the country has a museum at the railroad station which is worth visiting before you take the train to Silverton.

Absolutely beautiful scenic ride! We just took the train one way because a whole day on the train seemed like it would be a long day. We did a jeep tour in the morning and then took the train back to Durango which was a great combo and super fun! I'd recommend the outdoor cars because it was much easier to enjoy the view.

Always a great day trip. Up and back can get a little long, especially for the kidos. Consider one way and having someone drive and meet you or you can give them your return seat back to Durango and your drive back.

One of the reasons people travel to Durango is to take this train through treacherous mountains that are scary but stunningly beautiful, at the same time. There is a season for this and that is spring through the fall. Winter there is too much snow.

June through October weather permitting you can ride the narrow gauge train to Silverton. There is a nice museum with lots of info and a pretty cool electric train set up that mesmerizes small children and train fanatics. The station is at the east end of main street so an easy stop if you are wandering downtown.
