No matter what time of the year it is, temperatures in Java tend to stay in the comfortable (yet humid) 71-84 (22-29) range. However, one thing is dramatically different: the amount of rain. The best time to ... Read more
visit is during Java’s dry season (May to September); however, even this time of the year is no stranger to the occasional rainstorm. The weather tends to be most optimal in May, June and September when it’s dry and not as humid. However, if you’re looking for deals and a less crowded vaycay, visit during Java’s rainy season (November to March). Unlike other Southeast Asian countries, Java doesn’t get pounded too hard by monsoonal downpours; instead, expect a couple hours of rain in the late afternoon.

Less accessible than Central Java or Bali, East Java is a volcano explorer's paradise. This section of Indonesia is remote enough to keep tourism down but has enough infrastructure to make it comfortable. Mt. Bromo gets most of the attention but Kwah Ijen is well worth the effort and makes for a great stop on the way to / from Bali. Highly recommended for adventurers and those who love nature and the outdoors. If you are unhappy without luxury, best to skip and move on to Bali.

A place first and foremost of stunning volcanic landscapes, East Java is the highlight that redeems Java's bad (its beaches) and ugly (the cities of west Java) here on Indonesia's most populous island. Though the transit connections here can be a bit of a bear, and the tour operators that overcome that particular obstacle largely unscrupulous, a sunrise over an erupting Mt. Bromo, or a hike down into the sulfur plume in the blasted moonscape of Kawah Ijen easily makes up for it.
