El Chaltén is this tiny, tiny frontier village with harsh and unpredictable weather (including world-famous Patagonian wind), but awe-inspiring scenery that will blow you mind (and yourself!), You can enjoy trekking paths with different levels of difficulty (from short, one hour treks to full five-hour uphill walks), but they all provide great photo opportunities and magnificent views.
You end up being part of this weird community full of european tourists, villagers, backpackers and basically outdoor enthusiasts, where most people walk around in trekking clothes.
You can choose to go on full nature mode and sleep on Poincenot Camp, where you can wake up to the sight of the elusive Mt. Fitz Roy. Or you can stay at the many hostels or cozy hotels in town. Either way, and no matter the comfort level you go for, you'll be close to nature.
The village, however, is growing fast... since last year, they have cellphone reception and new buildings are everywhere. So go now, when there's still time to enjoy its unspoiled wonders and little town vibe.

El Chalten is AWESOME (if you're into nature and hiking)! If you're backpacking and looking for a place to party late into the night, maybe you should head somewhere else. PLEASE...

Seriously, El Chalten is almost sacred. It's on the edge of the National Park, and just a short hike into some of the most beautiful natural scenery on this earth. And I feel I'm qualified to say that since I've been quite a few places.
Lodging is so-so, but then, that's not really why you're there...right?

This tiny city in beautiful patagonia is Argentina's youngest town. Eat all the meat you can fit on a plate at Chalten's birthday asado held every year in October.

El Chalten is a smaller hiking town that serves as the base camp for hiking up to Mount Fitz Roy. While the town is small, with only one ATM at the bus terminal, it has many lodging options (mostly hostels and individual cabins). We rented a great 5-person cabin at Rivendel, ate breakfast daily at the sister restaurant, Wafeleria (which has WiFi), and really enjoyed beers and dinner at La Cerveceria. I recommend all three places highly.

This town, with a hike to Lago de Los Tres at the base of Mount Fitz Roy, is a must for those traveling to Patagonia.

Incredible town for hiking and exploring Patagonia. Incredible 4 - 8 hour hikes accessible from this quaint climber village

Known as Argentina's "trecking capital". Lovely and quiet little town where the mountaineering spirit is all over the place. Lots of international tourists and if clouds allow, great views of Fitz Roy. Great basecamp for exporing Los Glaciares National Park. Extra score: one of the towns in Argentina with highest environmental awareness. No plastic bags with your groceries or purchases!

A hiking mecca at the end of the world. The treks that go out of the little town of Chalten up to the surrounding mountains tae you through multiple climate zones, and in a single day, you would pass fields of spring flowers, ancient forests, rocky rivers, majestic cliffs, tundra-groves, melted-ice ponds, and eventually, glaciers and snow. If you are lucky (and quite), you might have a close encounter with a Condor or two.

This is one of the beautiful villages in Argentina. There are lots of one day treks or you can go for couple of days trek to Fitz Roi and see few beautiful glaciers.
We stayed in a very nice Cabanya (Zimmer) where we could cook and go to one day treks. Worth staying 3 days.
