The New River Gorge Bridge is the longest single arch span in the Western Hemisphere. It is nearly 900 feet high and offers great views either from your car or on the catwalk below the roadway on the Bridge Walk Tour. You can also get great views of the Bridge from the Long Point Hiking Trail. The third Saturday of October is Bridge Day when they open the bridge to pedestrians and allow base jumpers to parachute from the bridge into the gorge. Bridge Day weekend is also the time for the two day Bridge Jam music festival in downtown Fayetteville featuring great bluegrass, country and classic rock music, craft beer and camping.

This was my favorite stop on my trip to West Virginia. Pictures don't do it justice showing how big the gorge really is. But don't take my word for it, go see it for yourself.

New River Gorge Bridge is part of the National Park Services Park units. You can visit the Bridge through a back road down to the river. Disability Access is limited as with parking on the road. You will need about 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours to take the drive. You can walk across the bridge on Bridge Day which is the third Saturday of October.

Breathtaking views in all directions - especially in fall, when thousands come from around the world to hurl themselves off the bridge on the third saturday of October.
