Finland Vacations

Unlike the hustle and bustle atmosphere of most European countries, Finland possesses a sense of serenity, poise and peace, a byproduct of much of the country being forested lakes and remote wilderness. Blessed with infinite scenery, Finland offers treks through the countryside during the summer and cross-country skiing during the winter months. In ... Read more
the Finnish Lapland, where the Sami people live and still herd reindeer to this day, you can find tours to help you explore the last vestiges of largely unknown European frontier. To get back to civilization, stay in Helsinki, which somehow seems to blend a European capital with a small Scandinavian town. On Fridays, find the Pub Tram, which circles the city during the afternoons, doubling as a pub on rails. Finland offers plenty to do across the country in all seasons and weather. In winter, take advantage of the famous Finnish saunas and Northern Lights and, in the height of summer, join in the festivities of the Midsummer Festival around the summer solstice, when the midnight sun allows for partying in daylight until the wee hours.

If you want to visit Helsinki and other cities to the south while you can still feel your fingers, you’ll be joining the high season crowds from June through August when the mercury peaks just over 70F (21C). ... Read more
May and September can be decent times to experience relative warmth without as many tourists. But if you don’t mind stuffing your suitcase with a parka or two, there are many exciting adventures to be had when the temperatures dip below freezing, like taking a tour of Santa Claus’ Lapland home or seeing the Northern Lights. Both the summer and winter are relatively dry, but there is no season that is spared from precipitation altogether, so pack accordingly.

For a country with a relatively short history (got independence in 1917), Finland has a strong national identity and a great history. This quiet, often forgotten (in terms of tourism) country has one of the highest standards of living and one of the best education systems in the world. But for tourists is offers the design and architecture of its capital, Helsinki, the history of it old capital Turku, Local culture in Tampare, endless lakes and wilderness in its mid-section, and a winter playground in the north. Finnish Lapland is a vast expanse of forests, fells, rivers which comes to life, oddly enough, in the dark of winter, with dogmushing, skiing, and northern lights expeditions.

I have a soft spot for nordic countries. It was inevitable for me to like this country. I love the sauna culture; which is very close to my own Korean culture. From the coast to Lapland, Finland is for everyone!

The northern lights make an appearance over Finland about 200 nights per year. Doze off watching the dancing display from within a glass igloo at romantic Kakslauttanen Resort, 155 miles north of the Arctic Circle. And the next night, hunt for the aurora on a reindeer-drawn sleigh ride through the surrounding wilderness. In addition to two- and four-person igloos, accommodations also include a nearly century-old traditional log house with its own sauna. Hotel Iso-Syöte, on Finland’s southernmost mountain, is slightly more accessible and offers a similar glass-roofed experience in the Eagle’s View suite, along with snowshoeing, ice fishing, and overnight stays in traditional snow igloos, outfitted with reindeer pelts and specially designed sleeping bags.

ICE KARTING:

Go-karting on ice? Yep, pretty sure the Fins know how to have a lot more fun than the average. This new sport gives reckless driving a whole new name. These specially designed karts are built on studded tires and more powerful engines than their land-based counterparts, and the icy track requires a whole other level of technical finesse from the driver. Take the mini-wheel and go for a spin around a frozen lake to warm up, then pick up the speed and race a few friends for a chance at the prize. Either way, your winter crew will have a whole new claim for fame to laugh about on the way back to the lodge.

Upon landing in Finland for the first time, I was struck by all the greenery I saw from the plane. I soon learned that 75 percent of the country is covered by forests, and also boosts an extensive network of pristine lakes and hiking trails that anyone and everyone has access to. As a nature nut, I was sold there. But after spending five weeks traveling all around Finland, I discovered many more charms: saunas along the Baltic Sea, quirky design hotels, markets selling fresh berries, a Swedish-speaking network of very bike-able islands off the coast, and the list goes on. Finland is definitely worth a visit, not just to the southermost capital of Helsinki, but to cities such as Turku and the Åland Islands.
