Description
As the city's skyline symbol, the legendary Duomo is famous above all for its dome: Filippo Brunelleschi's Renaissance masterpiece, completed in 1436, created a double dome shell so that the dome is ... Read more
entirely self-supporting. It still stands as the largest masonry dome in the world, containing over 4,000,000 bricks! Climb to the top (all 463 steps) to get an unforgettable panoramic view of the city, which has changed little in the past 500 years. Construction started in 1296 on the site of the Roman basilica of Santa Reparata, of which there are still visible remains with a design by the great Florentine architect, Arnolfo di Cambio. The existing neo-Gothic facade was added in the 19th century by Emilio De Fabris. Covering a massive 3,600 square meters, the frescoes inside the dome depict the Last Judgment, painted by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari. If you can stand the throngs of people and get a good spot early, come on Easter Sunday for the Scoppio del carro (Explosion of the Cart) where a oxen-drawn cart stuffed with fireworks comes from Prato to the center of the city and ignited.

Despite the long queues, this place is worth the wait. A ticket would grant you access to all parts of the place, including the actual ascend to the top of the dome, the bell tower, the crypt and museum. There’s so much to see, so much history!

Definitely one of the most beautiful cathedrals on the outside with its distinctive pink and green marble. They were in the process of cleaning it while I was there and the difference is just amazing. It is massive...you can't miss it!

This building is incredible. My biggest regret was not waiting in the line to go to the top. Keep in mind, a modest dress code is enforced!

Unfortunately, we didn't get to go inside - being that we were there on a Sunday in the summer (!!), but the exterior is beautiful to behold as well. It's a gorgeous piece of work, and it reminded me of a candy house from a fairy tale.

Out of all the duomos in all of Italy, you walked into this one. Probably because it's gigantic, like really really big, and right in the middle of the city. It's also beautiful and, if you can stomach the line, the view from the top of the tower is pretty damn special.

Just one of the most beautiful buildings in the world ! From Brunelleschi .. Perhaps no everybody know that this building inspired even. Dessert that in florence is really famous : zuccotto ! Is the first semifreddo invented , and the person we need to thank is Caterina de' Medici ( one of the most important family in Europe ) . The shape of the zuccotto is absolutely equal to the dome .

The artistry of this church can't be matched. The whole town is amazing, from the tiny cafes where you get coffee in the morning, to the tiniest details of the design of this place. A must-see.

Beautiful building! It looks unreal in photographs and those don't even do it justice. A must see in Florence but beware of all the tourist traps around the Duomo!

It impossible to miss seeing Il Duomo in Florence. Boasting the largest brick dome in the world, this cathedral is another must-see when you're in town. Climb the 400+ stairs to the top for a breathtaking view of Florence as well as a close up look at the dome's interior frescoes.
