I LOVE THE SMELL OF BITUMEN IN THE MORNING!

The Albian Oil Sands area is actually located north for Fort McKay and is about a 1.5 hour commute from Fort McMurray assuming that the weather and the traffic are good. When you consider the common 12 hour shift and the trip to work and back, that makes for a long day and associated shift schedule.

Then there are the lucky ones who get to stay at Albian Sands Village or other similar Work Camps while toiling at the Bitumen mines. Many are workers and others are Staff that fly in from places like Calgary on Monday, stay here, and then fly home on late Thursday Afternoon. Then there were folks like me that were here to conduct a Health and Safety Audit and stayed as guests. It was all an eye opening experience and window into a hard (albeit high paying) life.

I very much enjoyed my week and a half stay here, but at the end was very happy to be flying out. I had Cabin Fever and felt like kissing the ground as soon as the plane landed in Calgary. There were many positives including:

- A huge modern, clean, and safe compound that included exercise/gym areas, a bar, a small shop, and even a Tim Horton's.

- A Cafeteria that served amazingly good food and in large all-you-can-eat quantities. The breakfasts and dinners were consistently delicious, and the sack lunches that I packed daily were very satisfying during the Lunch hour at the Facility that I was visiting. I paced myself the best I could and surprisingly gained only 1 pound during the entire trip. Thank G-d, all those blue collar calories didn't stick!

- Basic, yet comfortable sleeping rooms, with TV, a couch, and hot showers with lots of water pressure. I was lucky enough the snag an "Executive" Room, but would have been happy with the "Jack and Jill" room that I was originally assigned. There was also a handy laundry facility just down the hall.

- Evening Exercise. Walking 2-3 times around the camp did the trick after a large dinner.

- A Fun Bar. They're careful here, as hard working folks and alcohol don't always mix well. It was cash only, with limited purchases and hours, and a Plan B at the first sign of trouble. When I was here, all went well, including meeting really interesting people, and cheering on my colleagues on during the Trivia and "Minute to Win It" contests. This was a great opportunity to unwind, watch a little sports, and get to know folks a little better. Perhaps that only thing that was missing might have been a rousing "Village People" number (Macho Macho Man....) during Karaoke night.

- Meeting some really interesting people from all over the world and all walks of life. I met folks from every Canadian Province, especially Newfoundland. Somehow, we all got along, although perhaps I didn't want to know whatever might have been going on behind the scenes.
