Kappo Kaji is a Japanese restaurant in the Nakasu portion of Fukuoka that specializes in fugu. Fugu is Japanese for puffer fish and also known as a blowfish. It is a Japanese delicacy primary because it is what I call culinary skydiving because the toxins that the blowfish contains. If it is not handled correctly, it could potentially lead to casualty.

The restaurant is not terribly difficult to find. It is a two-story building with an image of a blowfish in front located near the river and on your way towards Canal City.

While fugu is the specialty, the restaurant serves other exotic seafood items like another Fukuoka delicacy, live squid. Fugu is a pricey commodity, but the restaurant is a relatively moderately priced place to try it. It would be better to try it at lunch compared to dinner if you can.

Visited Kappo Kaji for dinner. Sat on the first floor which is surrounded by a large water tank of live seafood. There was a no photos sign here that I did not see initially and hence no photos of the actual meal.

I decided to order a fugu meal set which was under US $30 of 7-8 different dishes from what I recall. It included fugu served in three different ways. In sashimi and tempura form as well as a congee like rice soup. The sides were also quite tasty which included numerous Japanese vegetables and chawanmushi (steamed eggs) was also delicious.

The fugu itself actually tasted quite familiar to other types of fish. Though the texture varied by style. The sashimi seemed jellyfish like, the tempura and congee versions were more like a cod or some other whitefish. The fugu portion is not large, but it is fine by me. No reason to tread dangerously more than you need to.

If you are looking to try fugu in Fukuoka, Kappo Kaji is a good spot to try it out as well as any local Japanese seafood items that you are interested in trying.
