One of the most important archeological sites in Catalonia!
The Ruins de Empuries are Greek and Roman ruins situated in an absolutely stunning location just behind the beautiful beach of Sant Marti de Empuries, in the picturesque Gulf of Roses on the Costa Brava.
The Empuries Ruins are an ancient port city, known to the Greeks as Emporion (meaning market) who created the city in the 6th century B.C. and to the Romans as Emporiae, who created a new city at the same location at the beginning of the 1st century B.C.

Remarkably unspoilt and still being excavated, fantastic setting right on the beach.

Greek and Roman remains. Wander through the remains close to the sea; visit the museum; a great day trip.

Costa Brava's lengthy history has resulted in innumerable ancient remnants that can be explored today. Some of the most impressive ruins can be found at Empúries. The crumbling walls of this former city - founded by the Greeks and later occupied by the Romans - overlook the ocean in breathtaking fashion. There's an archaeological museum to accompany the ruins so you can learn the full breadth of Costa Bravian history.

Located right on the beach, these are the ruins of both a Greek and later Roman cities. The city was founded as a trading hub by Greek traders in the 7th century BC. The sailors came from what is modern day Turkey (then part of the Greek empire), and predated classical Greece (eg before the Acropolis). Several hundred years later, the Romans set up a military camp here that coexisted with the Greeks, which later became a city. The history is fascinating, and the audio guide is good. Unfortunately the ruins are not very well preserved, so if you are expecting to be wowed by the architecture, like you are in Greece or Turkey, you'll be disappointed. Luckily there is a great beach right behind the ruins to make up for it. Also, there is no shade here, so don't make the mistake we did and get here at mid day in the burning heat. Instead, come enjoy the beach when it's warm and do the ruins in the late afternoon. Allow 1 - 2 hours.

Those are old ruins from Egypt and the Roman area. There is not much left, only lots of short stone walls. The info was interesting and museum too. The beach right outside where we went afterwards was very nice. You can also see the stone ruins from the path to the beach.

A must for lovers of Greek and Roman ruins.
The beach next to the ruins is my favourite beach in the area, reminding me of the Caribbean with spectacular views. It has nice beach bar restaurants, and the remains if a Roman harbour nice clear water for snorkelling.

Even though I came too late to be let in, you can see over the fence into the Greek part of the city. It looked really awesome, I hope to return someday and update this review!
