Peninsula. After the Catholic Reconquista, the palace was taken over by Christian rulers who constructed multiple annexes and other outbuildings. The complex’s name means “the red one” in Arabic, a designation stemming from the red stone out of which it is built. The Alhambra is known the world over as one of the best examples of Islamic architectural styles and an important historical location. It is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of Spain’s most popular tourist destinations.

It is indeed the main reason people visiting Granada. This Moorish influenced architecture needs you to buy the entrance ticket online so far away before your planned visit date, in order to mesmerise inside its magnificent-ness.

Not to be missed, but don't forget to buy your tickets online. Almost impossible to get in otherwise, with very limited availability, to conserve this historic place.

Alhambra is one of this places where, despite your coming with the highest expectations and fear that reality can't match the hype, you end up leaving amazed, astonished and thankful for what have you experienced.

Rising above the modern lower town, the Alhambra and the Albaycín, situated on two adjacent hills, form the medieval part of Granada. To the east of the Alhambra fortress and residence are the magnificent gardens of the Generalife, the former rural residence of the emirs who ruled this part of Spain in the 13th and 14th centuries. The residential district of the Albaycín is a rich repository of Moorish vernacular architecture, into which the traditional Andalusian architecture blends harmoniously.

Most interesting place, is a palace and fortress complex built by the Moors. If you ever have a chance to get to this part of Spain, you must stop here to see Alhambra.

Beautiful clear, cool days are the best time to spend half a day in this huge, UNESCO world heritage site. This example of Moorish and Islamic architecture in this complex so important to Spain's history is awe inspiring. Seeing the still functional water flow and irrigation would be enough alone for a visit, but the beauty inside the palaces is the main draw. The carvings are spectacular , but good walking shoes are a must - as we covered over 5 miles (8.5k) in the four hours we spent on a tour. Time well spent enjoying the gardens and their multiple original water features and the intricate carvings and pillars in the palaces and castles. I highly recommend taking a guided tour - there is so much history in the site that spans back to the early 13th century and, although beautiful just to admire, the stories were fun and the faster access on the group pass was great.

Beautiful moorish palace, and one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. The stylish mudejar architecture gives you an idea of just how beautiful, and luxurious this palace must have been back in its day. The use of water and nature gives a wonderful serenity to the palace. A pity that the stained-glass windows that once existed are gone, I can only imagine how it must have looked with those. Tour the grounds during the day, but also plan a return visit at night. The palace under moonlight truly is magical

Unforgettable visit to the Alhambra. The fortress, palaces and grounds will change any preconceptions you may have of living in the 13th century. The beautiful architecture, impeccable gardens and feats of engineering... words do not do it justice. No wonder this place has inspired poets and filmmakers.

I really loved walking around here. could easily spend at least entire afternoon. the gardens are incredibly well kept. don't worry about shade, but do bring some water if you're coming in the height of summer.

This UNESCO world heritage site can't be missed! The vast complex includes a fortress, palaces and gardens and a visit to all of them should be planned in advance since your ticket will only work once in each area. Plan ahead on ticket purchases as well, since they often sell out if you intend to buy your ticket at the gate. Admission is good for either a morning or an afternoon session, but expect the full visit to take several hours if you want to see it all.

The Alhambra is an ABSOLUTE MUST SEE! Be sure to set aside a full day to give this site the time it deserves. Don't miss the Generalife Gardens either!

Granada is set against the mountain backdrop of the Sierra Nevada. The city is most famous for being the ancient Moorish capital of Spain and home to La Alhambra, one of the greatest undertakings of Islamic art and architecture. Nothing can prepare you for a day wandering around the magnificent palace, patios and gardens. The Alcazaba is the Alhambra's Muslim fortress dating from the 11th century and offers great views of the city from the tops of its towers. The Casa Real is the showpiece of the Alhambra, and is renowned for the intricacy of its stonework. Finally, there is the Generalife, the summer palace of the sultans, set in the peaceful Alhambra gardens. There is plenty to see and do in Granada. Wander the narrow streets and see the Albaicín, the city's old Muslim quarter. Visit the Casa del Castril (Archaeological Museum) and the Baños Árabes (Arab Baths). The graves of Fernando III and Isabel, the Christian conquerors of Granada, in the Capilla Real are worth as look as are the Gypsy caves of Sacromonte, burrowed into a hillside in the north of the city.
