Sydney & Surrounds Hotel Insider
From the picturesque Blue Mountains to the packed beaches of Bondi, Sydney is a world-class city with a wealth of appeal. Popular with sun-worshippers, backpackers, honeymooning couples, and families, there’s something for everyone in this laid-back, oceanside Australian city - making it more famous and visited than the country’s actual capital, Canberra (though it is the capital of the state of New South Wales.) With some 10 million visitors per year, it’s the gem of the “land down undah,” and it’s equipped with plenty of lodging options to accommodate those who flock to its sunny shores.

Sydney Hotels
There are hundreds of hotels in Sydney, ranging from budget guesthouses to backpacker hostels to opulent waterfront resorts (Sydney is, after all, one of the top ten most expensive cities in the world.) If you’ve got dough to spare, treat yourself to the luxury of The Darling, which gives the terms ‘chic’ and ‘trendy’ whole new meaning - and is often visited by international celebs and high-rollers at the attached casino. The nearby Grace Hotel is an Art Deco lover’s paradise, with Old World charm (but New World prices), and the eclectic QT Hotel is housed in an old warehouse and staffed with Broadway lookalikes who greet you at the door.

Though the downtown district is chockablock with familiar name brands, visitors should venture out of the central block for equally as tasteful (and more wallet-friendly) accommodations. The Coogee Bay Hotel is a great option for those looking for a beach stay without exorbitant rates, and the Diamant Hotel in trendy Kings Cross is a good value-for-your-money boutique establishment near the Botanic Garden. For backpackers and students on a budget, the Cambridge Lodge Guest House is minutes outside the city center by train, situated on a quiet street, and offers free Wi-Fi (an elusive commodity in Australia.)

Attractions & Environs
No matter your travel style, there are plenty of things to do in Sydney. In the city, tour the Sydney Opera House, walk across (or climb!) the Harbour Bridge for spectacular views, or soak up the sun with the bronzed locals at Bondi Beach. If lying on a beach isn’t your thing, walk from Bondi to Bronte on a gorgeous, barely 4-mile hike alongside impossibly blue ocean and plunging cliffs. But spend some time digging into culture, too: Circular Quay is popular for its many shops and street markets, and Manly Island is a quieter, more laid-back town across the bay with spectacular hiking (and fish and chips).

And just because Sydney is a big city doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its share of Australian wildlife: Taronga Zoo and it’s sister WILD LIFE Park, are great places to see the elusive kangaroo, wallaby, and crocodile (not so elusive). The coastline and grasslands of Royal National Park are a great place for bushwalking - or basket-weaving with Aboriginals. Only an hour outside of the city are the stunning Blue Mountains, where eucalyptus trees and ancient caves hide some of nature’s best kept secrets (including the nastier ones, so be careful!) Although an easy day trip, we recommend slowing down and staying the night in nearby Katoomba, where the Blue Mountains YHA is a good place for backpackers, and Mountain Heritage is a great getaway if you want to get in touch with your spiritual side.
