Gros Islet Vacations

Just north across the channel from Rodney Bay sits Gros Islet, a quiet fishing village of small wooden homes and narrow streets full of stalls selling fresh produce. Come Friday night, however, the town transforms. Locals and visitors alike flood the town to attend the weekly Jump Up street party that often lasts into the wee hours. Streets are ... Read more
closed off to accommodate hoards of pedestrians and bars open their doors onto the street. Bands and snack vendors selling barbecue, fried fish, hot cakes and cold beer occupy the street corners. During the rest of the week, quieter activities include lounging on one of the many beaches within walking distance of town or snuba diving off nearby Pigeon Island.

Northern-most part of the island, but it is the most convenient for travelers once you get past the drive from the airport.

Quaint wooden houses and bustling market stalls along the water define this northern fishing village turned popular tourist destination. Small local shops mix with high-end restaurants and you'll find as many guest houses as resort hotels stretching beyond the shoreline. For the best views of Gros Islet make the trek out to the end of Pigeon Island and then look back toward the shore.

A vibrant community surrounded by great scuba and snorkel sites, and nearby you can ride horses on the beach. This is the place to go when you are ready to get out of the resort and see the real St Lucia.

In a Caribbean island nation that's lost most of its character and authenticity to sterile package resorts and hokey souvenir-ism, the Friday-night street parties in Gros Islet are arguably St. Lucia's best local experience. Liquor sold in plastic cups from folding tables in front of people's houses, and locals with home-fried fish and other island delicacies mix with dancers in the town square rocking out to reggae from 5-foot-tall speakers. This is authentic St. Lucia, and real island culture. You're unlikely to find it anywhere else on the island.
