Guatemala City Vacations

Guatemala City is the capital of Guatemala and its largest, most modern metropolis. On Sunday nights locals gather in the plazas of "guate," an activity the traveller in search of authenticity will enjoy. And authenticity they will find in droves, as Guatemala City has definitely not been scrubbed up for the tourist trade. Potholes and rundown ... Read more
buildings are punctuated by petty street crime. However, there are a few excellent museums, two of which are dedicated to Mayan culture. Edgy, artistic culture springs up in the Cuatro Grados Norte, while nightlife is best sought out in Zona Viva, an area of zone 10. The street food is also a must-try, with interesting goodies like Atol de Elote, a sweet corn drink, and sliced mango dusted with salt and crushed pumpkin seeds. Just be sure to look out for the cleanest vendors.

Big Nomad community in Antigua Guatemala. You still can experience the Mayan culture, a non commercial one in comparison to the neighbor country. the food is amazing and they have incredible natural places and views. You will love it.

Most people tell you to get out of the city as quick as you can. I must admit I lived in Guatemala for almost a year and very rarely ventured into the city. But if you do decide to go there are a lot of beautiful historic buildings to explore and some really great food to eat!

Get in and get out. Watch what part of town you're in. Love Guatemala but felt unsafe in GC.

Guatemala City has a pretty bad reputation in terms of safety. They have major crime and gang problems which have only gotten worse with the increased influence of the drug trade. There are several tourist things to do in the city if you have a day to kill, but if you are around for more time I would suggest going to Antigua and spending your time there instead.
