These guys have the concession for the National Park, so if you want to rent kayaks this is the place to go. We rented a kayak for a 5 day backcountry trip in Glacier Bay. The guys were very knowledgeable and helped us plan out our route before we left. The kayaks and the rest of the gear was in good shape and worked well. The trip was absolutely magical, but not for the inexperienced.

If you are looking for a guided trip there are a number of outlets out of Gustavus (e.g. Alaska Mountain Guides) doing 5-7 day guided excursions.

My guide was very knowledgeable about wildlife and Glacier Bay but was not a mind reader. Although I expressed some frustration over not being able to get my legs comfortable during our two hour kayaking trip, I should have complained more. When I saw the kayak, I asked about foot rests and was led to believe that they didn't have any. In the past, I've found that positioning my feet on the rests helps me press my lumbar spine into the back of the padded seat for more comfort and back support. Of course, the seat had no real padding, so foot rests may not have had helped. (When I complained to the owner about ending up with a backache, she said footrests should have been available). When my back hurt the next day, I realized I should have spoken up and said I can't keep paddling until I get more comfortable. When I complained about the cost of the trip in light of my back pain, Carla, the owner of Glacier Bay Sea Kayaks got very huffy on the phone and blamed me for not whining at the time. So if you're not comfortable, whine.

Bartlett Cove is a wonderful place to kayak, and Glacier Bay Sea Kayaks has the concession with the National Park. So just make sure you speak up if you're not comfortable and get your guide to help so that you wind up with a backache.
