A visit in Hamburg is not complete without a tour of its port, one of the most modern and efficient in the world. Most of the time you will feel the breeze, so dress accordingly. Hamburg is Germany’s largest maritime port, with 33 individual docks and 500 pontoons, stretching over 78 km squared. You can visit Rickmer Rickmers, a ship built in 1896 which sailed to West Indies and it’s opened for visitors at Doc 1.

Hamburg’s Hafen, or port, is one of the most interesting places in the city for a wander. Lots of action any time of day. You can take a boat tour or simply walk around and soak up the history. From barges to cruise ships to tour boats, there’s always something happening. This is Europe’s second largest port and is definitely still working hard, be sure to visit the historic 'Speicherstadt' warehouse district full of brick warehouses and a special charm.

Hamburg's port is by far the most mystical and charming aspect of the city. I find myself walking there at night, watching the smoke from the chimneys, from old boats. There is a feeling of a story here, an underground world, a charming place where sailors and tradesman meet and share their secrets.

The port of Hamburg is the largest in Germany and Hamburg's largest attraction. We spent an entire day on activities related to this area. We took ferries to various locations within Hamburg, ate at restaurants and just walked around the river promenade. Easy subway ride to get to the area.

A great place to hang out by the water and watch the boats go by. Also, the first weekend in may is the Hafen Geburtstag celebration; the world's largest boat festival! It brings in about 1 million visitors per year from all over the world.
