Description
Discover the Speicherstadt, the largest warehouse complex in the world, a city showpiece and bevy of museums to explore on a tour. From Landungsbrucken, take the family on a pontoon boat ride to see ... Read more
rows of red-brick, multi-story warehouses adorned with copper roofs and towers. Once a duty-free port zone and center for imported spices, Speicherstadt is largely responsible for Hamburg’s pivotal role as a supplier to Europe for centuries past. Some warehouses still store a host of wares, from spices, coffee and tea to carpets and more. You are sure to enjoy wandering about the Speicherstadt, Miniature Wonderland and Dachbodenbande toy museums. Enjoy entertainment by actors re-enacting dark parts of Hamburg’s history at the Dungeon museum.

The Warehouse District (Speicherstadt) is located in the port of Hamburg and has an impressive multitude of warehouses which revel an aspect of the city’s extraordinary architectural diversity. There is a Gothic influence, though the countless pontoons and decorative borders.

You can walk the area or take a water tour which in my opinion is much more striking, especially at night. Considering the amount of steel and brick, this warehouse area is a majestic place and an integral part of Hamburg's identity.

This center of warehouses is a great place to explore the shipping history of the city. There are some attractions specifically for kids if you have any.

Try to find a staircase or a scaffolding and go up to the rooftops to get a unique view of Hamburg.

Must see: Miniatur Wunderland.
You can easily walk to other famous parts of Hamburg. Also great: Take the ferry to get there.

Get up close and personal with the history of Hamburg's shipping industry. The name Speicherstadt literally means "City of Warehouses" as this district was used as a holding place for goods that were transported through Hamburg. Because Hamburg was big in the tea and coffee industries, tea leaves were dried and transformed into tea while coffee was held here before both enjoyable beverages made their journey to the rest of Europe and the world.

Nowadays, the buildings serve the purpose of being home to a bunch of really neat museums!

The place itself is nice, but the attractions here are mainly one thing:crowded. It is recommendable e.g. for the Miniatur-Wunderland (we mainly went there for the kids, but liked it more than I expected, it's really impressive) to go there and get a ticket for a later time and then do something in the meanwhile.
I like boats so of course we also visited it on the water-way which I liked better.

Da steckt so viel Geschichte drin.
