This building was my primary reason for visiting Harrisburg, and I wasn't disappointed. The capitol was designed by Philadelphia architect Joseph Miller Huston and completed in 1908. It was dedicated by President Theodore Roosevelt who declared it "the handsomest state capitol I have ever seen." After taking the free tour, which included stops in the Rotunda, Senate, House of Representatives and PA Supreme Court, I have to agree with him. From the 17-foot tall statue of "Commonwealth" atop the iconic green dome to the Rotunda floor with its rustic Moravian tiles, the entire building is simply magnificent.

The PA state capital building is beautiful from the golden dome of the exterior to the tiled floors and exquisite interior. A must see on a trip to Pa's capital city.

I have visited a lot of State Capitol buildings in the US and Pennsylvania's is one of my favorite. I hope I'm not biased because I'm a Pennsylvanian. The building is grand and contains some art treasures. Edwin Austin Abbey's murals around the inside of the dome are spectacular as are Violet Oakley's paintings around the whole of the building. She was the first American woman to receive a public mural commission. The stained glass window and Moravian tiles are also not to be missed. Free tours are offered.
