This is one of the best decisions we made on our day trip to Miyajima. You can take the ropeway as high as the Shishi-iwa Observatory, which has incredible views over Miyajima, as well as some lovely views of Hiroshima and the Seto Inland Sea. From Shishi-iwa, you can opt to hike the remaining 7km to the summit of Mt. Misen and gain a full panoramic view over the island. It is quite a hike, with many stairs the occasional steep incline. The trail begins by going down for a bit before it begins turning upward toward the summit. It's definitely not impossible - even for the out of shape (like myself), but take precautions (and water) and be sure to wear comfortable sneakers/boots and clothes if you plan to attempt. Prior to reaching the summit, you'll reach a plateau on which lives Reikado Hall - the temple of the eternal flame. The flame held in the Hiroshima Memorial Peace Park was lit from here. It's a lovely spot for a quick rest before embarking on the remainder of the trail upward, which is mostly stairs from that point out, and a bit rockier and steeper than the trail has been before. The view from the summit is incomparable, and utterly worth the climb, so I can't recommend this enough. There was a darling elderly man working in the gift shop in the observatory who offered me a sample of the hard candies they were selling there, so stop in and say hello if you spot him. Note: It's also a bit of a hike up hill to get to the ropeway launch itself, so do be prepared. If you're there during autumn, the leaves on the ropeway trail are incredible.

A local delicacy of the region are oysters which can be had at many of the local restaurants in various dishes, fresh or grilled over flames

Great way to see the ever colourful Momijidani maple forest on the way up to Mt. Misen. Wild monkeys at the top distract you from the view over the inland sea.
