going experience as the main event Disney films. The El Capitan Theatre opened in 1926 as a venue for theater productions until 1936. In 1941, it premiered Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" and then closed for renovations. A year later it reopened as a movie house under a new name, the Hollywood Paramount. In 1989, The Walt Disney Company and the Pacific Theatres, worked together to restore the elaborate Spanish Colonial exterior and colorful, lavish East Indian interior of this legendary theater. The newly restored theater was reopened in 1991.

Disney fans should visit El Capitan, the place of most Disney premieres. There’s also a little shop, partnered with Ghirardelli. The theater is cute, regular flashback movies are fun, and tickets are pretty cheap.

Used to be one of my favorite adventures. Cool live shows in front of new release films, live organist, lovely picture and sound, great set pieces in a small display under the theater, and great customer service. Unfortunately they replaced the seating a couple years ago to accommodate more people and now my size 14 (average size female of the US) gets hip bruises and my slender 6 foot 2 inch tall hubby has back pain from the chairs. We sadly can not attend a theater we used to take every visitor to for almost every premiere. Boooo....

Lovely Destination moviehouse for first-run Disney/Pixar movies. In between runs, there are fun movie events like Throwback Thursday or other good excuses to put some their awesome catalog on the big screen. (i.e Dumbo, Snow White)

Beautiful movie theater to take the kids. Surrounded by Disney characters. Downside long lines.

This is the best cinema to watch Disney, Marvel, and Lucasfilm movies. It has an organ player that plays cinema music while people are seating. There's usually a special pre-show, so it's a bonus thing for those who aren't late. After the show, there's usually an exhibit downstairs that displays props and costumes from the movie.

This is a great movie theatre that still has that old Hollywood vibe to it. Disney movies are shown here so it's a great place to take the family.

This theatre has kept it's classic movie theater feel. The down stairs usually has props from the movie, which is nice to see.

New Disney releases out in theatres? The El Capitan is the best place to go to catch these movies! They always decorate the theatre to the theme of the movie. Also come a little early because they usually put on a small pre-show. My favorite movie that I saw here was The Nightmare Before Christmas - they had all the full blown effects during the movies - snow, lights, fog, etc! This movie usually plays around Halloween/Thanksgiving time every year.

The El Capitan Theatre is a local Hollywood landmark taken over by the Disney Corporation. Disney features its new releases as the El Capitan for a limited engagement so if you see a movie you want to see make sure you buy tickets. This theater is just like your typical movie theater however some movies will have a live show beforehand. Tickets can be bought at the box office or through Goldstar. Definitely a place you should experience once in Los Angeles.

This is truly a special movie theater. Really like how they do special music before the show and how they have memoribilia there of the movie they are showing. Great to bring the whole family!

My first visit to El Capitan was when I was a kid and my cousin took me to watch Pocahontas :) She even bought me a commemorative pin that had El Capitan's name and Pocahontas' picture on it. Such nostalgia!

Nowadays I always keep up with this theater's showings since I love their gallery shows downstairs that give the visit extra oomph. I also dress up sometimes depending on the movie theme.

I've watched:

- Iron Man 3 3D
- The Wind Rises (Hayao Miyazaki's last film in Japanese audio)
- The Little Mermaid (Dressed up as Nerdy Ariel)
- Nightmare Before Christmas (Dressed up as Wednesday Addams Sally)

I had VIP seats for Iron Man 3D but I don't mind the general seating at all as I prefer the balcony area.

Overall a beautiful and nostalgic setting to enjoy specific movies :)

Cheap $2 parking with validation at Hollywood and Highland too!

Or take the Red Line Metro.

Love this theater!

El Capitan opened on May 3, 1926 with Charlot’s Revue starring Gertrude Lawrence and Jack Buchanan. For a decade it presented live plays, with over 120 productions including such legends as Clark Gable and Joan Fontaine. When Orson Welles was unable to locate a theatre owner willing to risk screening Citizen Kane, he turned to El Capitan. In 1941, Citizen Kane had its world premiere there. Disney did an amazing job restoring this old movie palace, and the space now also offers a gallery of Disney animated work (cells, drawings, etc.), and also an old-fashioned soda fountain. Tickets are a bit pricey, but shows include a live pre-show, usually on the theme of the featured movie. Visit their website (http://elcapitan.go.com/) for showtime and ticket information.

Stop by here even if you only have a few minutes if you want to get a good glimpse of the ornate as well as historic architecture that this theatre showcases. The rich colors and motifs are definitely worth studying. Unfortunately I only had time to witness the exterior. It's only a hop, skip and jump from the more famous Grauman Chinese Theatre and Hollywood & Highland landmark building on the same block, while on the sidewalk in front of the theatre has some of the world-famous embedded stars of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Came here for a showing of Wreck It Ralph. They really get into the movie spirit here! There was a pre-show, a little arcade set-up next to the theatre, and an impressive art exhibit downstairs - all centered around the movie. It was a lot of fun, and this seems like a great place to take your family's little ones to see a movie.
