If you’ve got kids, this is one of the best hotels to stay in Waikiki. The rooms are so spacious you won’t know what to do with all that extra room. But my favorite part of my time here were the amenities that people actually want and use: a life-size game area, free coffee and tea, free continental breakfast (including a DIY waffle station), and a popcorn machine complete with rice crackers and nori to make your own Hawaiian hurricane popcorn. Note that you may want to check ahead of time if you’re booking in 2019; there may be renovations taking place on the exterior lanais. If so, Coconut Waikiki has a sister hotel called Shoreline Hotel Waikiki.

For a moderately priced “boutique” hotel in Waikiki, I think the Coconut’s a great choice. It’s very clean and recently remodeled with a touch of art deco or 1960s pop to it, so it feels fresh and fun. There’s a small pool out back, plus concierge services; little treats such as all-day juice, coffee and tea; and valet parking. The hotel also has free Wi-Fi, huge in-room flat-screen TVs and other great tech details, plus a business center in the lobby. Book a high-floor room facing either the mountains or Diamond Head; you’ll be situated above a three-lane throughway along the canal, but the views are the best (keep the glass balcony doors shut for near-total quiet). You’re a bit far from the beach—about three blocks, although it’s a nice walk, and the side street is peaceful and safe. On Kuhio, only about a block away, there are lots of shops and restaurants.

I travel to Honolulu / Waikiki for business and vacation at least once a year, and I always find myself coming back to this affordably priced hotel, at least when they give discounts for online booking (either for AAA or sale prices on the Aqua hotels site). It sits overlooking the Ala Wai Canal, just a few blocks from the beach and Waikiki Beach Walk, but it's quieter than most other Waikiki hotels. True, it's not a condo so you won't get a kitchen here, but the microwave, sink & fridge are handy for reheating take-out and fixing your own snacks and breakfast (a simple free continental breakfast is included in the rates). Downsides: a pea-size pool, crowded valet parking only. Upsides: spacious rooms with retro-mod design, business-oriented suites with mountain views, super-convenient Waikiki location.

Located next to Ala Wai Boulevard, this charming hotel sets on a corner lot with a vine-covered gazebo seating area, ideal for taxi waiting. The décor is bright, brilliant and colorful, with a contemporary spin on art-deco design using lime green, blues, splashes of red and very unique lighting. The spacious room was just as striking and cheerful, with a mini-kitchenette, complimentary internet access, 42” flatscreen, table/desk area and a private lanai featuring fantastic views of the Ala Wai Canal and Koolau Mountain Range. The lobby includes a comfortable space offering free WiFi and computer use. The pool/area is small but relaxing and the fitness center is quite adequate. They also feature a satisfying complimentary breakfast, onsite coin operated laundry facilities, barbecue grills and a coffee/tea service 24/7 in the lobby. This is a more relaxed environment with the heart of busy Waikiki a few short blocks away.
