Iquitos Vacations

Iquitos is a city in the northern Peruvian Amazon rainforest region. It, along with Brazilian Manaus, is one of the most important ports in the Amazon River basin, specializing in lumber export. The city has become one of the principle research locations for the Amazon rainforest, and serves as a base for many outlying field stations. Much of ... Read more
Iquitos’ visitor traffic is passing through on the way to one of these stations. The rest is generally exploring the rainforest for pleasure, perhaps on a boat tour or through guided hikes. Most visitors are heading into Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, the largest protected area in the Amazon flood basin and one of the most amazing natural sites not only in Peru, but the world. The city itself went through a series of boom and bust cycles with the discovery of rubber and oil and bears the marks to this day. The huge, lavishly decorated mansions of barons stand in stark contrast to the typical homes of modern locals, and both types make for excellent sightseeing. NOTE-- Iquitos is known for its illegal wildlife trade (as pets or as food) and illegal wildlife exhibitions. Be aware of what you are being offered and where you are being taken in a restaurant or on a tour, as it is a crime to support these practices-

Iquitios is a bit touristy, but it's a great base camp for any solo or group adventures into the Peruvian Amazon. It's only accessible by plane and boat, but the city streets are usually teeming with locals, tourists and ever-present hordes of moto-taxis. You might just want to pass through on your way to further flung Amazon destinations, but you can still find the largest traditional market in the Peruvian Amazon, local festivals and indigenous communities all within five minutes of Iquitos.

Busy, noisy, really hot but amazing! nice night market by the river, with snake dancers, great crafts. The place to go to meet a shaman or visit the herbs and witch market ang get a real taste of Amazonian life .... not always what you'd expect!

Hermosa y calida ciudad, imperdible hacer el tour dentro de la selva amazonica. Y la vida nocturna es muy activa.
