It's quite busy with a lot of stores and ice cream shops alongside baclava places for you to see, enjoy and explore. However it's not quite as amazing as people make it out to be but it's still worth a trip to witness people and their interactions.

Love the vibrant part of this city. It's unfortunate that all the old and historical buildings are not converted to hip hotels, restaurants or cafes.

A foodies paradise with some amazing kebad places to visit. I am a vegeterian but i could see very happy coming out of the kebab places. A shoppers paradise with a pedestrian street just next to taksim square. The century old tram still show off its charm is a must ride.

Every great city has a central square, and Istanbul does not disappoint. A gathering place for both locals and tourists, it has a little of everything. A pedestrian shopping street begins here, and there are many places to eat in the square. Unfortunately, many of them are American restaurants, which I don't particularly like to eat in when I am traveling.

This place is so full of energy! It's the place to meet your friends and head down Istikial Caddesi to shop and eat and party. The Saturday evening I was there a trolley converted to a sound stage rolled by with a 5-person band on board. All electric and lights powered by the trolley line!

The landmark public square of Istanbul is just a huge empty concrete slab, too bad there is poor vegetation here. Nothing to see or no where to sit, its just a central place where all the main roads of Istanbul seem to meet.Don't miss the hot yummy chestnuts. Istiklal street right next to it is where all the shopping and strolling happens.

Amazing place to soak up Istanbul's nightlife. Outdoor bars line the alleyways. Pass the day playing checkers and smoking hookah or come during the night to dance to live music in the streets.

One of the supreme ironies of global tourism is the combination of the words Taksim Square. You see Taksim means square in Turkish so what everyone's really saying "Square Square." Taksim is probably the busiest open area in Istanbul. It is the meeting place of Istiklal, Siraselviler, Tarlabasi and Cumhuriyet Streets. There is a metro station with furnicular access to the Bosphorus. Several of the largest hotes, including the Marmara Pera, are located here. In the center there is a monument to Ataturk and the foundation of the republic. Closer to Tarlabasi Boulevard you'll find the flower stalls where you can buy cheap roses and tulips. Taksim is also the place where you're most likely to get pickpocketed.

Taksim square is basically the center of Istanbul. Anything your heart could desire is in Taksim or down Istiklal Caddesi (street). This is where I usually am on a Friday or Saturday night and some of the best clubs in the city can be found here. If you are a little tired of the overwhelming amount of historical stuff in Sultanahmet, I would suggest a night in Taksim.

At the entrance to Istiklal street from Taksim square you will find a line of street vendors/ restaurants along the corner that sell Islak Burgers. If you stick around until 4am you will see a large group of drunk people trying to get their own burger. You MUST try and Islak burger before you leave Istanbul.

Taksim is a main transportation hub and a popular destination for both tourists and the native population of Istanbul. İstiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), a long pedestrian shopping street, ends at this square, and a nostalgic tram runs from the square along the avenue, ending near the Tünel. Surrounding Taksim Square are numerous travel agencies, hotels, restaurants, pubs, and international fast food chains such as Pizza Hut, McDonald's and Burger King. It is also home to some of Istanbul's grandest hotels including the InterContinental, the Ritz-Carlton and The Marmara Hotel. It is a favourite location for public events such as parades, New Year celebrations or other social gatherings.

Marred by political turmoil and government efforts to eliminate entertainment in the area, Taksim is now more a symbol of political defiance than the festive place it once was.

Be careful in this area and avoid hotels here for now. Tourists aren't immune from stray plastic bullets and chemical water cannons.

This area is definitely the place to be on Thursday through Saturday nights. You can definitely get the local flavour of clubbing and drinking in Turkey. One recommendation here is obviously to try the Raki, the turkish national liquor. Take it chilled with equal parts mineral water, or if you are really brave (or stupid) try it straight.

This is the center of Istanbul's nightlife. There is a huge number of pubs, bars and restaurants for every taste. Watch out not to get lost in the narrow streets that depart from the square.

Nothing much here, maybe more fun if you like to feed the birds. There was a protest going on when we were here but its very peaceful!

Taksim is a modern part of Istanbul, crowded people and also a heavy traffic but here is a main hub of transportation. You can walk from the Istiklal pedestrian street to Taksim Square. Look around people, I loved it.

Dance, drink, have fun! Active life is streaming there. But be careful in Taksim, that's not a cultural center...

Giant square, very central to city life and the site of past protests - an integral stop on any visit to Istanbul. It feels big and busy but affords great people watching.
