I visited Byblos in a day trip from Beirut - it's an easy hour's drive down the coast and spent most of the time wandering around the ruined castle area, where we had an excellent local guide. We stood on the castle ramparts overlooking the sea, sat in the Roman ampitheatre and clambered inside one of the tombs to look at the enormous stone Sarcophogus of one of the Kings of Byblos.

We were there in June and they were just setting up for the open air music event with seating right by the sea. Later we looked around the pretty, small port and could just have easily been in Greece or Spain 20 years ago. We stopped for lunch at Pepe's and there are also a number of other restaurants around the harbour where you can get great seafood.

Byblos is a picturesque seaport town just north of Beirut. While the history there is fascinating and textured (like all of Lebanon) what held my attention were the pictures of the owner of the town's biggest and most famous seafood joint, photos of himself with every Miss Lebanon to have ever lived since 60's (plus a handful of celebrities and literati) and yet despite the passage of time, this guy somehow hasn't aged a day since 1973.
