There are two unique aspects to The Alaskan - the bar and the hotel. The Alaskan Bar is perhaps the most lively weekend watering hole in downtown Juneau. While it tends to draw a fairly young crowd, there is almost always a live act preforming and the atmosphere makes you feel like you've stepped back in time to the Klondike Gold Rush. As for the hotel upstairs, it was once a Victorian-era brothel and retains that same rustic charm. The rooms are simple with some cheaper options available for those willing to share a bathroom. The Alaskan is said the be the oldest operating hotel in the state.

We stopped in the Alaskan Hotel when one of our tour group said it had been their dream to have a shot of whiskey in an Alaskan Bar. We walked thru the doors and knew we were in the right place. Decorated like an old time saloon and hotel, we immediately felt the Alaskan frontier spirit. A must-see, rather than the usual touristy type bars that caters to cruise ship tourists.
