This is a great location for watching the sunset, spending happy hour and eating pupus (appetizers). This is the home of the original Mai Tai. Luau also performed at this resort.

I heard that this was the first major resort in Kona. If that is true, it explains a lot. There were lots of pros and cons here, but overall I was happy with our experience.

One of the top reasons to stay here is that it is walking distance to lots of great restaurants, bars, and other attractions. This is the area to stay if you don't want to drive everywhere on your vacation. Lots of the higher-end resorts in Kona seemed to be very isolated. When we are on vacation, we like to stay where we can wander out and still be stumbling distance home. But if you don't want to wander out, the Royal Kona is also home to possibly the best hotel tiki bar I've ever seen. It is outside but shaded, right on the coast with dramatic waves in the background, and with strong tiki drinks, food, a decent happy hour, and their regular prices are really not all that bad considering it's a resort with lots of Japanese tourists. Our room was also comfy with a nice large patio.

On the con side, as others have noted, it is OLD. The tiki theme is so charming because it is ORIGINAL, not actually retro. This hotel is the real deal, and no one so far has attempted to update it to take advantage of the 60s modern tiki Shag aesthetic. Stay there now, because if someone comes in and figures out the remodel potential, the prices will probably double or triple. Also, this is a resort that sells to lots of groups, which means that you might be sharing the place with groups of 12 year-olds on spring break, as we did. Also, if you face the parking lot or reception, which most of the rooms do at least partially, the buses start arriving at 6:30 - 7:00 a.m. And the windows are the original 50s-60s single paned glass.

One tip if you go--the luau can be heard and seen from all over the property. If you are not so interested in the food, it may not be worth booking a ticket. We had reservations, but discovered on our first night that we could see the whole thing from our balcony, so we canceled. Then we noticed that all the tour offices down the street seemed to have more highly discounted tickets anyway.

The property consists of three towers with a total of 428 rooms. It
also has a spa and a very nice swimming pool in the property. Its fitness center
is located at the Bay Tower. The common areas are nicely kept with water features, a
gift shop, a bar and Don's Restaurant which serves a full breakfast buffet for
$16.95.
I love the Romance Center for planning and holding weddings and vow renewals, a thought I wanted to instill into my husband’s head but quickly got brushed off. Large conference rooms for those with business agenda. The hallways were lined with pictures of all Hawaiian royalties. After all, it is the “Royal” Kona hotel!
Wi-Fi comes with a fee of $9.95 per day or $39.95 per week.
The room is nicely decorated with a lanai (balcony) with an ocean view. Furniture appeared quite dated but maintained the charm of a Hawaiian home atmosphere.
Kitchen in the unit has a small sink, refrigerator, and a coffee pot. It is quite adequate for a short stay.

Very solid hotel that's well-kept and offers plenty of amenities. It's one of few hotels in the area that hosts its own luau, a Hawaiian experience (albeit one that probably costs a bit) that is worth a try. They have live music in the garden, notably from Henry Kapono, a famous Hawaiian musician, who performs here once a month. A large restaurant and a separate bar with ocean views are huge plusses.

There's a spa, fitness center and pool for keeping healthy. But with three towers, just walking across the property is a workout. Okay, it's not that hard, but the Royal Kona Resort is a spacious place.

Rooms are large and clean, though a bit dated like the entire property itself. The patio is a great place for watching the sunset. Beds are large and the decor is pleasantly Hawaiian.

the view from this hotel was simply stunning. so much so we enjoyed sitting out on our balcony more than going out which is something you're not really supposed to do when you go overseas. the staff were so, so friendly and happy hour on a sun-lounger by the pool was the best way to end a hot day. highly recommended!

The hotel is in a great location when staying in Kona-but what I am recommending-the pool lunch menu has a mahimahi sandwich with sweet potato fries to die for!

I couldn't have been happier when we pulled into the Royal Kona Resort....situated right in downtown "old Kona", the hotel had the perfect location for a romantic get-away for the bf and I. We stayed in the Lagoon Tower with an AMAZING oceanfront view.

The room itself was quaint and although it was a tad on the older side--it was lovely! Vintage bamboo furniture, huge comfy beds, bar area with fridge and sink, and a wonderful balcony for us to sit and breathe in the ocean.

By the time we checked in and settled into the room, we had decided that we were in need of a few Mai Tais--poolside! We went downstairs to the great open air bar and grabbed a few drinks. Lucky us, it was happy hour too! Cheap and tasty cocktails--SCORE! The pool was pretty and had the appearance that it flowed into the ocean. Half a star off because there was no jacuzzi. Oh well....

After catching the beautiful sunset at the pool, we began to get the rumblies in our tummies. After a quick trip to the concierge for some advice, we had reservations booked and ready for us. Very Helpful!!!

We were bummed that our stay in Kona was so short that we couldn't take advantage of all of the hotel's amenities (especially the little private lagoon underneath our room) but we hope to be back soon! I miss waking up to the sounds of the waves lightly crashing upon the shore---The perfect complement to our romantic get-away :)
