This place was absolutely fantastic and the memories that I have from being at this place will be with me for many, many years to come. In the future I will make an effort to visit Tonga again and will insist on staying at the Heilala Lodge..
The Owners and staff were very pleasant and for the 2 week stay I was totally relaxed and was starting to feel like home. I hope to go back soon and visit the Heilala people again.. Malo to all

Owned by German, Sven and his lovely and knowledgable Tongan wife, Caroleena, this accommodation is clean and perhaps a little better than the others we stayed at however it's not quite as friendly feeling. I think that's as much because the guests didn't mix. Fales are clean, showers are good, tea and coffee making stuff in your room however you practically have to beg for coffee and milk and the milk is only powdered. Barfridge provided.
You are right on the beach which like all of Tonga is enclosed by rock further out where the waves crash. The water is too shallow at low tide to do anything other than paddle ankle deep looking at blue starfish and black cucumbers. As the tide comes in you can start to snorkel but there is only sporadic live coral to find and not a great variety of fish. Still, it's nice, if a little cool in July.
There is a restaurant which offers just one or two choices for tea however the food is good. One night the restaurant was closed and we were offerred to be driven to neighbouring places (for which we were charged). A light breakfast is supplied or you can buy more.
We did a wonderful tour of the island with Caroleena which took all day and included stopping at roadside stalls on our way home to buy fruit for b'fast. This tour was great as Caroleena knows so much about her country and people-watch her cut a coconut open in her hand with a huge knife, cringe.
