Traveling by Ferry is kind of fun. Our family used this means of travel many times going from Kodiak Island to the mainland. Be sure to get a stateroom if its a long ride, especially if you are traveling with children.

One of the best ways to experience Alaska is to take the Alaska Ferry through the Inside Passage from Bellingham, Washington all the way up to Anchorage. It is not luxury travel, but it is an amazing way to see the wooded islands, fjords and coastline of southern Alaska. You can pay for a cabin, or bring a sleeping bag like I did and sleep on a deck chair under a heat lamp. Some people even set up their tents on the deck (bring duct tape if you plan to do that). The ferry stops at multiple ports along the way, so you can break up your journey to see different spots! If you are lucky, you may see some whales!

Starting Point: Anchorage

The Route: Glenn Highway (Route 1) and Richardson Highway (Route 4) to the Maritime Highway system (Valdez via Cordova to Whittier) and finally the Seward Highway (Route 9) back to Anchorage

What to Expect: Bring your zoom lens on this land-and-sea odyssey—part of this National Scenic Byway is actually one of America’s most beautiful ferry rides. Experience the grandeur of Alaska’s colossal wilderness, abundant sea life, and glaciers, capped off with a water-top trek on ferries through Prince William Sound before a return trip on the popular Seward Highway.

Where to Stop: Ramshackle Copper Center for sourdough pancakes; Columbia Glacier to watch icebergs calve and sea lions frolic; Cordova, a remote fishing village on the Orca Inlet.

When I wasn't hitchhiking, I rode the Alaska Marine Highway all over southern Alaska. These big ferry boats offer standard seats, and for overnight trips, platforms for pitching tents or curling up in sleeping bags (apparently they do have cabins as well). I would recommend bringing your own food since the cafeteria is not that great. The scenery, however, is second to none. I saw so many whales I lost count!

In the summer of 2011, the Alaska Ferry added weekly service (three days a week) between Juneau and Gustavus from May through August 31. I took the ferry back from Gustavus in June. It was a beautiful day, and a very relaxing 4 and a half hour trip. I saw some whales in the distance and enjoyed stretching out and taking a nap on a lounge chair on the outside deck. Others stretching out in the solarium area under heat lamps. The ferry felt like the cruise ship for the common man/woman, and at $33 one-way, it certainly fit my budget.

Danielle Adkins, a spokesperson for the AMHS told me that they have the most frequent whale sighting reports from June through August.
