presidents took 14 years and tons -- literally -- of dynamite. The rather dour faces are South Dakota's biggest tourist attraction, and are a sight to behold, especially when you consider that long after our civilization has gone these granite faces will still be gazing at the Black Hills.

The family can easily spend a day here hiking the trails, visiting the sculptor's studio, and watching the documentary film about the work involved in creating the sculpture. Top off the day with the lighting ceremony. Restaurant and gift shop on the grounds as well.

A National Memorial that is a must see for everyone. Very patriotic and does provide some easy hiking trails, great food and a great gift shop for souvenirs.

Nice monument that is worth checking out if you're passing by. I wouldn't necessarily say it something I'd go out of my way to see.

When I go to visit this memorial I stay for hours. It is so informative. I always stop for one of the concession's huge ice cream cones, too.

One of the United States' most recognizable landmarks, with great viewing of the monument, as well as a hiking trail that will take you even closer. Realistically, you won't spend more than an hour here, even with the short hike, and some shopping. It's free to get in, but there is a parking fee.

An iconic monument dedicated to 4 of the U.S.'s greatest presidents. The fact it is carved right into the rock face of a mountain is an amazing feat of engineering. It is definitely a cool landmark, and makes for a great picture/postcard

One of my favorite childhood memories! The mountain is such a work of art and it's such a neat place to experience American history. The area is beautiful to drive-through and there is a great gift shop and museum. Around this area there are great placed to visit, camp, enjoy nature, and soak up some history.

I couldn't park and walk up because when I went (last October) the government was shut down. There are a few places along the road that you can see it. I might have done that anyway because parking is $11. It's fairly impressive though maybe not as big as the movies lead you to believe.

For as long as I could remember I have wanted to visit this monument. A chance availed itself on a road trip with my friend so we swung by and it did not disappoint. The magnitude of this memorial is hard to grasp until you see it in person, it's surreal.

When visiting definitely get some Thomas Jefferson vanilla ice cream. They make the ice cream with the recipe that he used, it's delicious! We grabbed some of the presidential ice cream and sat on the ledge of the amphitheater and just stared in awe at this massive monument. It was a great stop and rest from driving and I would recommend stopping to anyone driving by.

A little disappointed in how far away it is from the tourist center and all, but it is a must see for any family.

The park was inspiring. My wife loved the gift shop, the wild goats were a pleasure to see. The whole drive and awesome views on the drive to the park was lovely. We were amazed at the beauty of the park. Would love to see the other carvings completed

Very impressive drving up as you see it perring out above the tree line, but then you wiat in traffic, pay a fee, enter a huge parking lot, and then join the masses, up a short concrete walkway. The magestic qualities instantly vanish is a herd of tour bueses, but an impressive feat none-the-less. I recommend going to see it if you are nearby.

I visited Mount Rushmore for the Fourth of July. Although the place was packed and I had to park miles away, it was a good show. If you want to do the same, get there very early.

I got there before dark and toured the park, which has a small museum, a restaurant, and several outdoor viewing areas.

Mount Rushmore is so iconic that it's difficult to judge properly. It looks exactly like what you've seen in every postcard your entire life. Looking at it objectively as art, it's impressive what a sculptor can do with only dynamite. The viewing terrace and flag pavilion are a nice touch. Mostly, though, I appreciated the side view of Washington's nose you get when you drive away.

Attended the Lighting / Flag lowering ceromony at dusk. Ok... was perhaps the most jingoistic thing I've ever seen - pledge of allegance, signing the national anthem and having every member of the audiabce ( pehaphs 100) who served in the military come up and 'touch the flag' is kind of an unsettling interpretaion of the place. Non americans there found the thing uncomfortable and kind of tackey.
That said the park service definatly know who thier audiance is - witness the surprising number of active and former service members in the audiance. Also the fact that all this is in a place where the people who used to live not that long ago here were systematicaly exterminated seems at odds with the message of freedom and liberty

It is - all said- a beautiful place in the high hills and a very well designed lamdscape and viewing area.

Mount Rushmore is called the Shrine of Democracy, and it really should be on your list of places to see in the US!
