Oh roti, how do I love thee? Latha me count the ways. If you’re a local, chances are you’ve already run into your uncle, postman, his uncle, the mayor and his 15 nieces at Sri Latha. Roti-lovers converge here for arguably the best roti canai (and some say thosai) in town. A little crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, the roti canai here is best enjoyed with their homemade curry and dhall. On the table are packets of nasi lemak (rice cooked in coconut milk, topped with anchovies, sambal and an hard-boiled egg) if you’re looking for something extra to your meal. You may need to ask for directions to Sri Latha as it’s located in an unsuspecting alley in Bandaran Berjaya in the city. While breakfast is perhaps the best time to go, they serve a pretty decent lunch too.

The best indian food in town and it must be eaten with hands! A must try are the fried fish eggs and fish head curry. Order banana leaf (vegetarian) with a variety of side accompaniments and order the meats as an add on. The service can be a bit slow especially on weekends, so aim to go on weekdays as there is less crowd. It's also located near Gaya Street and the city center - so this is a good place for tourists to try good Indian food.

This is perhaps one of the best places in Kota Kinabalu that serves banana leaf rice and a variety of roti. Besides the usual curries and dhal, they specialise in deep fried quail, deep fried fish roe and fish head curry. The mango lassi is really refreshing! And it's a great and affordable for vegetarians as well.
