As if a picturesque smattering of rust red seaside cottages (remnants of an 18th century fishing village), wasn't enough to satiate your need for a unique Norway getaway, the 10-acre islet of Haholmen has an intriguing legacy of Viking adventures. In the 1980s, the tiny island's former owner, Ragnor Thorseth, a modern day adventurer, rebuilt an authentic Viking ship and sailed it from Haholmen to the farthest reaches of the world, including a trip to the Arctic Circle and North Pole. The famed ship, Saga Sigler, went on to become an international symbol of goodwill for UNESCO, before it sank in a terrible storm in 1992. The wreckage was salvaged and reconstructed inside a large barn-like structure on Haholmen. Guests can sit inside the mighty vessel (not to mention another Viking replica that shuttles people from the island to the mainland and nearby Atlantic Highway) and learn more about exactly what this tiny part of Norway is all about.

My recollection of our unusual stay in an exotic place during our Norway trip… It’s July 2nd and the heater is on in our cabin “Fanytta” on Haholmen Island. Gusty wind is blowing outside, birds are flying back and forth protecting their nests, and we are cozy and comfortable inside. We could say that we are stranded on a tiny island without any way to get to the mainland until next morning. This is our hotel for the night. It’s quite an experience. We parked our car on the mainland for the night and a speed boat took us to the island (with our luggage). The island only has this hotel and nothing else. It’s mostly cabins (about 10-12 buildings with 2-4 rooms in each, bathrooms, electricity and INTERNET), plus a restaurant, bar and a little museum. The landscape around is very rugged, with rocks and some grass and moss growing on the rocks. There seem to be an abundant bird life on the island. Besides seagulls and oystercatchers, we saw at least a couple of other kinds of birds. After we checked in, we went for a walk around the island. We walked a bit further from the buildings and were turned away by angry birds. We think that we got too close to their nests – they started flying over us, very close, screaming and flapping their wings. It was very scary and we decided to get away from them.
You wouldn’t say that this place is so isolated when you look at the plentiful choices on their dinner menu and enjoy the dishes that they prepared. We had a very delicious and beautifully presented meal. Back in our cabin, we were delighted to see that around 11 pm the sun didn’t set yet. Later on, we watched beautiful sunset.
