After visiting Kumamoto Castle, I walked over to Shimotori in search of a restaurant for lunch. I was specifically looking for a spot that served the local specialties that this city is known for. Kumamoto is most known for basashi which is raw horse meat sashimi. Definitely not something you would find on an American menu.

I had initially went in search of a restaurant that I found in my travel guide. When I couldn't locate it, I decided to just walk around and dine at the first place that caught my attention. On a side street off Shimotori, I found this restaurant called Mi-Ne Sushi.

It turns out Mi-Ne Sushi is a Kumamoto restaurant chain that happens to have some branches in Hong Kong as well. There is a difference between the ones in Kumamoto and HK as the latter are conveyor belt style sushi spots and the former are not.

The restaurant is three stories I believe. First floor is where the sushi bar is. If you are looking for a traditional Japanese dining experience, they offer that seating style upstairs.

While I did not seek out Mi-Ne initially, it turns out that I did not really have to go to so much trouble looking for basashi as it is offered here. Though I decided against it and opted for a lunch set instead.

I decided to order the 1575 yen lunch set based on the offerings that I saw on the picture menu. Specifically because the entree was prepared in a Japanese cooking style I haven't tried before. Although not quite as exotic as eating basashi, I decided to try kamameshi for the first time. Kamameshi in English is called kettle rice. It is similar to the Chinese dish, claypot rice.

Of the meals that I had in Japan on my recent trip, I liked my dining experience here the most. The kamameshi contained some sort of boned in white flesh fish on top which was flavorful. I liked the crispiness of the rice that the kamameshi cooking style creates. The side dishes were full of healthy vegetables and pickles that were enjoyable. Rounding out the meal were the chawanmushi (egg custard) and cheesecake dessert which were very savory.

Service here was friendly. I was able to order without a problem here despite the language barrier. If you want to try Japanese seafood/sushi and local Kumamoto specialties all in one place, I would recommend Mi-Ne.
