Kumamoto's most famous attraction is Kumamoto Castle. It is one of the most renown castles in Japan. Having been to another famous castle, Himeji Castle on my previous trip to Japan, I was interested to see how the one in Kumamoto compared.

If you intend to visit Kumamoto Castle, I would suggest buying the Kumamoto Tram day pass as there is a discount for admission to the castle. I think the discount was 100 yen. Otherwise, the admission is 500 yen. The castle is very close to the Shimotori shopping district making it a good place to grab a bite and shop before or after a visit to the castle.

Comparing Himeji and Kumamoto, I have to say that the Kumamoto Castle grounds are much prettier. There are plenty of flower trees and the autumn colors were in full effect when I was visiting which made for plenty of great photos while I was there. And once you reach the outside of the entrance of the main castle building, you see a very nice view of the city.

In regards to the interior, I have to say Himeji has Kumamoto beat in this regard. I found Himeji had more interesting exhibits inside the castle. Himeji did a better job of telling the story of the history of the castle. At Kumamoto, you are not allowed to take pictures in most of the interior areas of the castle which dulls the experience a little.

However, the saving grace is that at the top of the castle is an observation deck in which you can take pictures of the city. There are also a few windowless spots so you can take some photos of the city with an unobstructed view.

Overall, I enjoyed my visit to Kumamoto Castle. Himeji Castle's interior and exhibits are better than Kumamoto, but Kumamoto Castle has the better castle grounds and views in my opinion.

A stunning and photogenic outside, but rather disappointing interior. It is basically a glamorous lookout tower. Still worth a visit. One of the top castles in Japan. Was rebuilt in the 1960s.

There aren't many well-preserved historical Japanese castles on the island of Kyushu, but Kumamoto has a good one. After you've toured the castle, head over to Suizen-ji garden, one of the most famous traditional gardens in the country. (No kidding, it's a national landmark - but why is it so far out of the way down in Kyushu? Good question.)

The architecture for the castle is similar to what one associates with Japanese castles. The screens inside are impressive, as can be the view from inside. The flower garden on the grounds is also nice.
