BETWEEN THE REVIEWS w/ Rodney S

Q) Do you enjoy frequenting farmer's markets, Rodney?
A) Yes, I do, Rodney. On any given Saturday, you might find me at the Cerritos or Buena Park Farmer's Market. Knowing Lakewood started their own farmer's market not too long ago, we decided to check it out for the first time.

Q) What were your first impressions?
A) How dead this farmer's market was. Being noticeably smaller than other markets I've been to, it seems to attract the commensurate amount of people. The setup is pretty much standard - produce on one side, artisan goods on the other. The vendors, for the most part, seemed friendly, in a longing to make a sale type of way. There were a decent variety of things to buy, with some stalls bringing in more people than others.

Q) Which vendors got most of your attention, Rodney?
A) One of the produce vendors had cherimoya for sale, which I love. Cherimoya are one of my favorite fruit. So much so, I have 4 varieties at home. Currently, they only produce a small amount of fruit for me, hence the need to purchase some. Being quite expensive, averaging around $7/lb, I have 4 varieties at home due to the exorbitant costs. Over on the artisanal side, a vendor sold kefir products. I was a little perplexed as to how they were more like yogurt in texture. I used to ferment milk kefir regularly at home, and it's a thick liquid. The vendor informed me how he can legally claim their kefir because of x amount of kefir in them. Another vendor sold fermented vegetables & drinking vinegar. I shot the breeze with him, as I'm planning to start making my on raw apple cider vinegar and fermenting various vegetables at home, while sampling some of his merchandise.

Q) Where is the Lakewood Farmer's Market located & what's the parking?
A) Rodney, the Lakewood Farmer's Market is located on the Lakewood Blvd. side of the Lakewood Mall, south of El Torito. Obviously, parking is free at the mall.

Q) What are your final thoughts?
A) While I'm a fan of having more farmer's markets available, being used to the Cerritos & Buena Park Farmer's Markets, I'm more accustomed to their larger selection. If I was in the area, I wouldn't hesitate coming back, but since Cerritos is my hometown, I'd much rather stay closer to home.
