Delray Beach

What a great spot in downtown Las Vegas! It was a comfortable hotel with a casino and free wifi. There are also a few bars and restaurants on site to hang/dine at!

In the heart of downtown Las Vegas right across from Main Street Station and , this hotel is considered the best place for the Ninth Islanders. Hawaiians love the California hotel. There’s the casual spot Aloha Specialties which is open daily and serves rice bowls, chicken curry, macaroni salad, Portuguese sausage and spam. The Market Street Cafe also caters to Hawaiians with their oxtail soup which is only served at special times throughout the day in addition to daily Hawaiian specialty lunch and dinner specials. There's two other restaurants which are more high-end, one of which is a noodle house and the other serves lobster and steak, sometimes they have dining specials, too. There’s a few bars on-site and a showroom which hosts headlining acts and local bands. The other captivating thing about the property is the array of retail shops and specialty stores to browse through

California was one of several of the downtown Las Vegas hotels that pleasantly surprised me. With the renovations of the area's nightlife and eateries, while there are some exceptions (Golden Gate) and some that have outright closed up (Binions, Las Vegas Club), many of the classic hotels have actually been keeping up with the changes quite well. The 741-room California hotel has been renovated, both with the hotel rooms and the casino itself, but has even more plans in the works for the near future.

The unique feature of this hotel is that their target market is Hawaiians. Often called "The Ninth Island," Hawaiians have a long history of migrating to Las Vegas. They are the #2 minority in Las Vegas after African Americans. The philosophy of the hotel keeps Hawaiian styles and sensibilities in mind, and keeps islanders surrounded by familiar sights, sounds, and smells. From the tasty Hawaiian influences in their dining offering to the big, beautiful plantation shutters in each of the guest rooms, Hawaiians and other nationalities alike will feel right at home at the California.

I stayed at the Cal about 10/11 years ago, but have been in the casino in more recent years. It's an older hotel and the rooms are nothing fancy. It's cheap, sure. But now a days you can get a 4 star hotel room on the strip for very little!

Rooms smell funky.

The restaurant downstairs was ok and the cafe is pretty good. This seems to be the place for Hawaii visitors to stay and the only reason why we stayed here, was because we had done a package with Omni and this was the hotel that came with the package.

Wouldn't stay here again, but there are definitely worse places. What can I say, I'm very picky about hotels I stay at.

On my visit to the hotel I was greeted by their friendly staff members and definitely made me feel right at home. As I walked through the property I could a feeling of quietness and tranquility. The hotel and casino doesn't have a buffet but many many tasty restaurants which are wonderful. I really enjoy the Market Street Cafe This location is pretty great, and you can take the elevator down to the M level of the Hotel where there is an indoor bridge that will take you right over to the Main Street Hotel if you're like me and love a good buffet. Rooms are spacious, clean, and I think it's cool that the Hotel has a roof top pool. Its not that big, but it's still really nice all in all.

The casino is a bit smoky and the slot machines are a little bit older, but the table games are cheaper than on the strip and the other people in the casino seem to be enjoying themselves and friendly too. The Fremont experience is in walking distance which is fun if you feel the need to get out and explore.

For a downtown Las Vegas hotel, the California Hotel and Casino is not too shabby. For one thing, they have updated and renovated their rooms in recent years. The rooms are still small and the casino is smoky like any other downtown hotel, but I like this one for its value. For well under $100 per night, I can have a decent bed and access to the hotel's delicious 24 hour restaurant, Market Street Cafe, which serves American and Hawaiian comfort food. Also in the hotel is my favorite Hawaiian restaurant in Vegas, Aloha Specialities. Ono local food here! If you are from Hawaii, you will feel right at home.

Oxtail Soup.
That's all you need to know. After a late night of partying, my friends and I always end up out here for the soup. A little bit of a taxi ride (or if there's a dd in your group), but it's worth it!
