Tropicana Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, is loaded with all sorts of history. It was the 12th resort developed on the Las Vegas Strip and upon opening in April 1957; it was reviewed as being “The Tiffany of the Strip” due to its lavish design and tropical theme. However, hidden behind the glimmer and glam, Tropicana actually started out under mobster influence. I can only imagine the stories the walls of this casino and hotel could tell.

With the above said, this is not a history piece. Despite my true desire to delve further into the crooked antiquity of Tropicana’s beginnings, this article solely is to give you a brief description of what Tropicana has to offer you during your Las Vegas Vacation.

If you choose to make Tropicana your Vegas Vacation resort, below is what you can expect:

Why did we choose to stay at Tropicana. We wanted to find the best deal at the south end of The Strip. We had stayed toward the north end about ten months prior to our Tropicana Las Vegas vacation and I had stayed in the center of The Strip multiple times before that, so we knew that for this trip, the south end was it.

Tropicana was not the first hotel that we thought of staying at when making our location choice; however, with my Expedia points, the two nights we stayed there were free, so why not?

I love Las Vegas and frequently check Las Vegas vacation deals. Most times, I notice that Tropicana has low rates, so, I assume it is regularly one of the cheap Las Vegas hotels to stay at during Vegas vacations. If a good deal is your ultimate goal, I imagine Tropicana will provide you with one.

The customer service is good and the employees are friendly. The check-in representative, bartenders and servers were personable and relatable, but that is to be expected; these are the casinos front-line people and these are the characteristics one would want in their front-line staff.

Rooms are nice and modern and with how the hotel is physically positioned, most of them have nice views. The rooms all come with a safe to store personal items, money, etcetera. The basic rooms are still quite spacious and each comes with a chair and chaise lounge or small sofa.

As always, upon check-in, we asked if there were any upgrades available. They had some but they were pricier than we cared to pay. We did try to politely negotiate; however, our negotiations were not met. My advice, always try for free or inexpensive upgrades but, unless you are luckier than we are, which you could be, you may be stuck with your originally purchased room at Tropicana; which, again, isn’t a bad thing, they are nice.

The gaming area is sub-par, in my opinion. My friends and I had difficulty getting on a table at Tropicana. That said, we really did not want to play cards here anyway, as the table minimums were always quite expensive. The slot floor was okay; I have been on better ones not only in Las Vegas, but in other casinos in the US. Other than a few slot pulls here and there, we pretty much chose to gamble at surrounding casinos.

The location of Tropicana is at the south end of the Las Vegas Strip. What is nice about this location is that it is a very short drive to the airport; I believe we spent $7, including tip, for a “Lyft” ride. It also is surrounded by some really large and popular casinos; MGM Grand, Luxor, Excalibur, Mandalay Bay and New York New York, just to name a few. Also, if you plan to take a drive into the desert, it is an easy in – easy out, from the city.

We have heard that the entertainment at Tropicana is pretty good. Although we were unable to catch any shows while staying there, friends of ours did see the “David Goldrake – Imaginarium” magic show and they raved about it. Also, judging by what we have read about “Purple Reign,” the “Prince” tribute show at Tropicana, and its 4.5 star rating, I feel comfortable stating that it is probably worth seeing as well. Tropicana also has The Laugh Factory Comedy Club and who doesn’t love a good laugh...or, twenty?

The Tropicana pool was enjoyable. It was quite large and had multiple divisions. There is also a pool volleyball area for those who want to get a little competitive in the water. One feature that we really liked was the swim up black jack tables. There are two swim up black jack tables located at the pool in the shaded portion past the main swim area.

Although neither of us could win a hand, it was still something none of us had experienced before. Swim up black jack opens at 12:00PM. Tropicana does have the usual Vegas pool “must haves,” music, a full pool bar, and wait staff; these three things, mixed with swim up black jack, can have you spending all day there, if you wish. However, if you are hoping for an adult only pool, well, you best look elsewhere; Tropicana's pool had plenty of rug-rats running around.

The food options at Tropicana currently appear to be better than they were when we visited. One of the things we did not care for was what felt like limited food choices or a lack of desire to dine at Tropicana. We actually ate at surrounding casino food courts and restaurants instead. It was not that Tropicana's food was not good, in fact, we never ate there to sway one way or the other. However, I can state that the little variety that they offered at the time of our trip, did not appeal to us. With that said, I recently received an email from Tropicana stating that they spent the last few months revamping and upgrading their restaurant options. The natural researcher within me went straight to their website and noticed that there are a lot more choices under the “Dining” tab.

We love Las Vegas and frequently check Las Vegas vacation deals online. Most times, we notice that Tropicana has low rates, so, I assume it is a fairly inexpensive place to stay during Vegas vacations. If you are looking for a good deal, I imagine Tropicana will provide you with one.

To be honest, I only stay at the Tropicana during busy season when all the bigger properties are booked, but it's still a solid property.

I've stayed in the Tropicana in Atlantic City before but the Vegas version looked nothing like the one back in New Jersey. What really stood out for me was the rich colors of the fabrics contrasted with WHITE floors! Stunning combination that really caught my eye and made this casino stand out from crowd!

The Tropicana was recently renovated, and they changed quite a bit. It has become much nicer than what it used to be under the previous management. The location is hard to beat, across the street from MGM Grand, NYNY, and Excalibur. I heard the new pool party was worth checking out.

Tropicana has taken a number of measures to establish itself as a LGBT-friendly hotel, including making donations to the Human Rights Campaign and becoming a corporate member of the Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. But perhaps the best part of this hotel's gay-friendly initiatives is the fact that it hosts the Sin City Shootout, the largest annual LGBT sporting event in North America.

The only reason to stay here is the POOL!!
so obviously go in the summer.
The restaurants are all mediocre, service is not great and the casino has bad ventillation.
So bad that if you do step in the casino for 20 seconds you will reek from head to toe.
I live in Vegas and have experienced a lot this needs to to torn down and redone.
EXCEPT for the pool...

Things have been looking up at the Tropicana for over a year now. Totally renovated rooms have a splash of Miami style, with bright sunset colors and chaise longues in the bedroom. Rates are a bargain, given the pretty great location on the Strip. The casino doesn't give great odds for gamblers, but the restaurants are above-average (like Bacio for Italian or Biscayne Steakhouse) and the zany Mob Attraction is entertaining enough.

Tip: Like 'em on Facebook or follow 'em on Twitter for super room sales, which sometimes include VIP Breeze Check-In.

stay away. this place has got to be the shadiest casino in vegas. There were prostitues hanging out all over the entrance and pimps harassing women who passed by. Never going near this place again for sure.

Ok James Bond Fans. The interior to James Bonds super swanky suite in Diamonds Are Forever, is in The Tropicana, or should I say was. This place has been redone so many times that the actual room does not exist any more. Check it out anyway! Also if you follow me (Jay Amernick) on Social Cam I have a James Bond Diamonds Are Forever Video Location Guide! Live it up you are in Las Vegas for cryin’ out loud!

This is just a really old hotel, not at all impressive, I suspect they will get rid of it sometime soon, if you are looking for a place to stay during conference time, this would be a cheap option that is likely to still have vacancies closer to the conference dates.

Tropicana is actually not a bad hotel since it has a decent location and plenty of walk ways to other casinos. This is mostly a location casino with decent rooms since the suites are much cheaper than can be had at a higher star rated place in Vegas.

However, you're really getting a closer to downtown experience here. Body World was here once, that was weird. The drinks are cheap, especially late night. The late night specials are dirt cheap, and the hotel smells like one big cigarette. The waitresses are ... mmm... and the minimums are low but don't expect any grandeur.

Staying here while staying on the strip would be one of my last choices only because ... I'd rather pay dirt cheap for ... what I expect dirt cheap to be, or I would go spendy with a nicer place to get more luxuries. Sleeping on a hard bed inebriated or not is not really great since either way you wake up with back pain.

Don't stay here. I mean, unless you want the hotel that's absolutely closest to the airport (well, technically that's the Hard Rock)... ok, unless you want the hotel that's closest to the airport and still on the strip...

My girlfriends booked this place and I stayed with them one night. Yikes. It's really dated, and the hallways are a bit, redrum. They said they booked it because it's cheap, but then later I found out what they paid and told them what I was paying at Planet Hollywood (like $5 more), they all screamed.

Anyway, call around, book somewhere else. Only book here if it's last resort!

Well, you get what you pay for and that is no different for Tropicana. Lots of smoke and it's just not the place you really want to be. Cheap rooms though, which is a positive.

So, a few friends and I decided to be cheap and come to a hotel in Vegas that was cheap. That was something that I regret to this day. The hotel room is alright, slightly better grade than a motel 6. The room felt a bit dirty though. It didn't look like it was dirty, but it sure felt dirty.

The casino itself was OK. There are a wide range of tables and slots. The are one of the very few casinos on the strip that has $5 tables. Not many, but some.

What made this a freakish trip was actually what happened during our stay.
*Story time!*
We were walking down the hall back to our room. We saw this African American guy walking down the hallway. As he was stumbling down the hallway, I noticed that his skin was glimmering. I realized that it looks kind of like blood (hard to see because of his skin color). I was like, wow, this guy did really good on the bloody makeup. I he got closer, I realized that it was too real, and it was still gushing out. I was like "WTF?!?!? He got attacked?" We ended up trying to help him get some help. But, apparently he got smashed in the face by a bottle and mugged in the parking lot of the hotel. The same lot we parked our car.

At the end, I will never stay here again.
