This place is an absolute must-see in Launceston, and it’s only a quick drive or a slightly steep walk from the city centre. The walking trails are maintained well and offer fantastic views of the gorge. The chairlift and the suspension bridge are both highlights, as is the swimming pool (it’s only open in summer but it’s free and a great place for a dip after walking around in the sun). Highly recommended.

Beautiful spot near Launceston to get a bit of exercise and get back in touch with nature. The walking trail goes around (and over, by bridge) the gorge with stunning views throughout. There's a cafe on site too with free range peacocks strutting around.

Allow yourself at least half a day (we recommend a whole day) to explore all the nooks and crannies of this fantastic park. If you're a hiker you'll love the trails that wind their way along the steep walls of the gorge and out into the backcountry. On your return to the basin, why not enjoy the longest single span chairlift in the world? The views up and down the gorge are stunning, just don't look down! If the weather is hot, you could even dip your toes in the public swimming pool by the river's edge. This is a great place for the whole family, and it's only a 2 minute drive from central Launceston!

Cataract Gorge is located close to Launceston and is a lovely place to come for a hike and a picnic. The gorge has a beautiful river running between it, which you can swim in if you desire. Warning – it is very cold and also full of rocks and weed. If that doesn’t tempt you, you can use the swimming pool adjacent to the lake for free. There’s a café here (which is a bit overpriced) but I’d recommend bringing a picnic to make a day of it.

Cataract Gorge was super easy to get to and a beautiful place to visit. We went for a nice relatively short walk but there are options for longer hikes. Watch out for peacocks in the parking lot and checkout the world’s largest single-span chairlift.

This stunning nature spot, easily accessible on foot from the centre of Launceston, should be considered a must for anyone with an interest in Tasmania's abundant natural beauty.Situated along the lower section of the South Esk River, walking trails lead into the gorge basin itself (where there is a cafe, swimming pool, and chairlift that children will enjoy), and off deeper into the surrounding hills. Allow at least a half day to fully explore and appreciate.
