Built as a chorten, or a white dome stupa-it is a climb up 500 steps, so those with knee problem, be aware of this challenge. Do try to reach the top as this is one of the vantage points above Leh city-about 5 km away that gives you a panoramic view. A modern structure built jointly by Japanese and Indian Buddhist as a landmark to celebrate the 2500 years of Buddhism.

A beautiful monument for peace that stands like a white pearl, surrounded by the Himalayan peaks. The Shanti Stupa towers over Leh and is one of its most popular tourist attraction. Apart from being a Buddhist religious and spiritual place the Shanti Stupa also offers spectacular panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks and the valley that stretches out below.

The Shanti Stupa stands majestically on a hill opposite another landmark of Leh, the Leh Palace. It is a beautiful structure built in two levels and embellished with exquisite reliefs and statues of the Buddha. The base of the Stupa contains the relics of Buddha. The Shanti Stupa was completed in the year 1983 and built under the aegis of both Japanese and Ladakhi Buddhists. An early morning or evening visit to Shanti Stupa is a heavenly experience. There is a motorable road that leads to the Stupa which is further reached by a climb of about 500 steps.

I struggled up 500 steps at high altitude to reach this white domed stupa, only to discover a coachload of tourists had beaten me to it on a back road I hadn't realised existed!

Gifted by the Japanese to promote world peace and commemorate 2,500 years of Buddhism, the panoramic views are especially stunning at sunrise and sunset.
