Description
Founded in 1416, Drepung was once Tibet's largest and most influential monastery but the number has dropped from 10,000 to 700. You may want to visit the pilgrimage trail, which includes the Ganden ... Read more
Podrang (Ganden Palace), Tsokchen (Assembly Hall), Ngakpa Tratsang (College of Tantric Studies), Jamyang Drubpuk (Jamyang Choeje's meditation cave), Loseling Tratsang (College of Dialectics), and Tashi Gomang Tratsang. Scripture readings are usually held at midday; and there is the humorous spectacle of novices racing and sometimes tripping over each other to fetch tea from the kitchen for their elder.

The oldest monastery in Tibet where Buddhism primarily started to take root, where up to 7700 monks lived here.

The biggest monastery in the world during early 20th century. Prepare to walk a lots, visit the main kitchen of the monastery. Take time to explore

Beautiful Monastery. Not as crowded as Potala. Great overview of Lhasa. You can take photos inside for a small donation for each temple/room.

Nice monastery not far from Lhasa. Great in combination with a visit to the Sera Monastery. There is a nice short hike here in the hillside -- known as the Drepung Kora. One of the must-sees near Lhasa.

Great and colorful temple in the outskirts of Lhasa. It feels a bit more open here than at other temples, i.e. you are allowed into the kitchen and sometimes to stay inside and witness a prayer meeting.
The temple area is enormous with several large building complexes, and it is a bit of a walk up from the parking lot, so leave yourself ample time to see it all.
