I didn't actually go into the citiy but was in the train station which is significant, because it's a beauty. It was designed by Santiago Calatrava.

Liege is probably the largest city in the French speaking southern half of Belgium. It is a lovely city, though you can tell that it has not managed the same kind of economic success that has its Flemish peers

Local from Liege
First to Review

An important location in the heart of the French speaking part of Belgium, Liege is a lively city off the beaten path for the majority of visitors to Belgium. Though Namur technically holds the title of "Capital of Wallonia," most would agree that Liege is the cultural heart of the Walloon region.
Nicknamed "La Cite Ardente" (The Passionate City), visitors will find that locals are indeed as lively as they are warm. Liege loves to party and the bar district or "Carre" will be crammed almost every Friday and Saturday night. Though this mecca of inebriation may be rough around the edges, you will find people dancing, singing, passing out, and making out until well past dawn.
Folklore is extremely important to Liege natives and this is especially true around the fifteenth of August, when an island in the center of the city called Outremeuse explodes with festivities and the streets flow with Peket (a grain based drink that comes from Liege). One can still here bits and pieces of Walloon, the now dead language dating back to Roman times.
If you are spending an extended period in Belgium and want to see another side of the country that Brussels, Bruges, and Antwerp cannot offer, come to The Passionate City on a Friday night.
