decorated with gardens. It links Restauradores Square with the Marquis of Pombal Square. The Liberdade Avenue and the Restauradores Square have its origins in a public park, Passeio Público, inaugurated in the area in 1764, created by Pombaline architect Reinaldo Manuel. Initially surrounded by a high wall, the park was revamped in the 1830s and 1840s by architect Malaquias Ferreira Leal, who introduced a new arrangement of the flora as well as fountains, a waterfall and statues.

Avenida da Liberdade (literally "Liberty Avenue" in Portuguese) is an important avenue in central Lisbon. It is a 90 metre-wide boulevard, 1100 m long, with ten lanes divided by pedestrian pavements decorated with gardens. It links Restauradores Square with Marquis of Pombal Square.
This is also a theater district and home to several elegant buildings, although many of them were torn down for newer constructions in the mid-20th century. However, some attractive and prize-winning architecture remains, with one of the most beautiful examples found on numbers 206-218, adorned with art nouveau glass and currently housing a Prada store.

One of the main shopping streets in Lisbon. I found the neighborhoods near it more interesting than the street itself but Liberdade is in a good central location.

the This is the long main avenue of lisbon similar to Champs Elysees of Paris. av has a certain elegance with fountains and cafe tables shaded by trees, as well as a pavement decorated with abstract patterns. You can also see here the Monument to the Heroes of the Great War.

This is an important avenue in central Lisbon - 10 lanes plus gardens wide. We took the metro and walked back along this thorough fare. The architecture and shops along the way were very nice.

Once again, near my hotel. I believe this area was redeveloped after their earthquake in the mid-1700s and it's the one section of the city that's on a grid. So it's easy to navigate!

One of the main streets in Lisbon, Avenida da Liberdade (Liberty Avenue) connects the Marquess of Pombal Square and Restauradoes Square. The street is lined with many shops. It is nice to have a large pedestrian area on such a well-traveled street.

Avenida da Liberdade (Liberty Avenue) is an important avenue in central Lisbon, in Portugal. Gayle and I walked it every day when we were in Lisbon as our Hotel was close by. The Lisbon Metro also runs underneath for your convenience.

The Avenida is a 90 metre-wide boulevard, 1100 m long, with ten lanes divided by pedestrian pavements decorated with gardens. It links Restauradores Square with the Marquis of Pombal Square.
The Liberdade Avenue and the Restauradores Square have its origins in a public park (Passeio Público) inaugurated in the area in 1764, created by Pombaline architect Reinaldo Manuel. Initially surrounded by a high wall, the park was revamped in the 1830s and 1840s by architect Malaquias Ferreira Leal, who introduced a new arrangement of the flora as well as fountains, a waterfall and statues. The allegoric statues representing the Tagus river and Douro river in the boulevard of the avenue date from this time.

After much discussion and polemics, the avenue was built between 1879 and 1886, modelled after the boulevards of Paris. Its creation was a landmark in the Northwards expansion of the city, and it quickly became a preferred address for the upper class.

Many of the original buildings of the avenue have been replaced in the last decades by tall office and hotel buildings. Nowadays it boasts several interesting buildings that reflect Portuguese architecture from the late 19th through the early 21st centuries. Its pedestrian sidewalks and roundabouts, paved with the traditional Portuguese pavement, are decorated with many monuments and statues that pay hommage to important personalities like Almeida Garrett, Alexandre Herculano and others. The large monument to the fallen in World War I, inaugurated in 1931, is the work of Rebelo de Andrade and Maximiano Alves.
