parishes of Lisbon, this region can be commonly explained as a loose association of neighbourhoods, with no formal local political authority but social and historical significance to the urban community of Lisbon. The bairro or "neighbourhood" resulted from urban expansion in the 16th century, forming outside the walls of the historical city, and is characterized by an almost orthogonal tract (developing from two phases of distinct urbanization). It is a fundamental quarter of Lisbon, organized into a hierarchical scheme of roads and lanes: the roads, the structural axis, run perpendicular to the river; and the lanes, or secondary axis, cut parallel to the river. The matrix of allotments reflects the persistent use of the medieval layout; the division and multiplication of this module had its origin in the variations of the architectural typology. The space constructed is dominated by living spaces implanted in long narrow lots, of three- to four-storeys in height, with asymmetric facades consisting of windows along the various storeys and staircases along the lateral flanks. Although less representative, the Pombaline-era buildings are common, essentially introducing modifications to the level of the façade's composition. Although there are many typological variations to the facade designs, certain elements are repeated, such as the corners, bay and sill windows, eaves and attics, securing a homogeneous urbanized front.

Awesome area of drinks and bars! It really comes down in one street, where 100-200 thirsty students/young people hang out in the open and enjoy the company!

There are loads of great bars and restaurants in the Bairro Alto area and the streets are narrow and quiet so it is great for wandering around in the evening. Grapes & Bites is a particularly good tapas restaurant usually with live music but it can get busy.

Local from Lisbon, Portugal

One of the most popular places to go out at night in Lisbon, both for locals and tourists. Very lively narrow streets, full of people, cheap beer (from 1€/1,5€), pubs with live music, including the traditional Fado. There's something for everybody, including an "Erasmus corner" great if you want to meet fellow foreign students. There's something going on every day of the week, specially between Thursdays and Saturdays. A lot of locals start their evenings here before they go out to other pubs and discos. Really nice vibe overall. You can also go there during the day, it's in the city center, with a lot of attractions and sightseeing spots close by.

Lisbon's bar and nightclub quarter can be found across the many tightly packed lanes and alleyways in Bairro Alto. Expect live music, a vibrant, friendly atmosphere and plenty of cool, creative interiors. In characteristic Lisbon fashion, the roads are steep and cobbled, the terraced apartments tall, narrow and brightly coloured, and many balconies and washing lines hang over the streets.

This is a very interesting area to visit in Lisbon. The narrow streets hold many restaurants and shops plus great architecture around every corner. Bring your walking shoes.

This hip neighborhood is a great place to shop, eat, drink and people watch. Reminds me a bit of Soho or Nolita in Manhattan (but without the mall-ification taking place in Soho). A great place to explore that is hopping at night.

Lovely neighbourhood in Lisbon, in the historical centre. Narrow streets and yellow trains lead you up and down the hill of this area. During the evening is very lively with lots of small restaurants (which may be tourist traps though...)

Great place for a drink, a good meal, and to wander the streets until late at night amongst the crowds.

It's a fun half day trip to laze around the city. The cable cars are pretty fun especially if you take them up to near the Castle.

Lively old world entertainment district. Love wandering the old, narrow side streets - full of surprises, good food and fun.

This area is great! Especially during parties or festivals. The streets can get packed with people ready to have a good time. Mind you, all of this happens at night...and when I say night, I mean late!

Bairro Alto is a vibrant bar scene where everyone drinks on the streets all night long. It's lively and magical. You can enter the Bairro Alto from Chiado or from Principe Real. Once you are near Rua Norte, you are in the right place. Rua Atalaia and Barroca are also full of bars.

It doesn't matter which bar you choose - after a certain point in the evening, everyone spills out onto the street to party. There's a great wine bar with a red velvet curtain in the doorway which is cosy and quirky when it's quiet but has a DJ to get the crowds bopping away later.

Barrio Alto is one of Lisbon's oldest neighborhoods that serves as a decidedly lively entertainment district. This historic 'hood has played host to the gay, punk, heavy metal, goth, hip hop and reggae scenes. Nowadays, in the ever popular singing clubs known as fados, you'll find a mix of all the above. Diverse and dynamic, fun and funky, there's always something cool goin' down in the Barrio Alto.
