Description
Come face to face with Portuguese history at Lisbon's Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, an expansive monastery constructed during the early sixteenth century. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983, ... Read more
the monastery was built as a tribute to God as thanks for aiding the country's explorers, particularly Vasco de Gama, the Portuguese sailor who mapped the route to India. Save time at the end of your visit to peruse the monastery's adjacent museums, the National Archaeological Museum and the Maritime Museum - and take a stroll down the street to Casa Pasteis de Belem to sample a rich pasteis de nata, a traditional Portuguese egg tart, the recipe for which can be traced back to Catholic monks in the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos.

The Jerónimos Monastery is a former monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome near the Tagus river in the parish of Belém, in the Lisbon Municipality, it was secularised on 28 December 1833 by state decree and its ownership transferred to the charitable institution, Real Casa Pia de Lisboa.
The monastery is one of the most prominent examples of the Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style of architecture in Lisbon. It was classified a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the nearby Tower of Belém, in 1983.

Of all the places I visited in Lisbon I think this was perhaps the most overrated. Firstly, the queues are enormous no matter what time you arrive. Frustratingly, you can queue for an hour and then a coach load of cruise ship passengers arrive and get let in before you. Inside the architectural detail is impressive but there is little else to see or do. I would admire the outside of the building (just as impressive) and save yourself the time, expense and effort.

One of the top sites in the Belen neighborhood. Spend time walking through the cloisters which are fairly unique in their design.

This old cathedral contains the tomb of Vasco da Gama. Walking through the huge chambers is spiritual and powerful.

A breathtaking example of Late Gothic Manueline style architecture, this monastery has to be seen to be believed. Unimaginably intricate in its design, every steeple and archway has been exquisitely carved. Explore the capacious interior, or wander through the front gardens and admire the impressive water feature.

I fell head over heels for Mosteiro des Jeronimos when I was planning our trip and fell in love all over again in person. Part of the UNESCO heritage sites, the monastery is nothing short of magnificent. The Manueline style monastery spans the entire length of Praca do Imperio and more, built to honor the famous explorers of Portugal - Gama and Prince Henry the navigator. The reliefs and sculptures decorating the pillars and arches of the monument depicting religious themes are absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, we did not get to visit the interior as both the Monastery and the Belem Tower was closed on Mondays.

One of the most prominent monuments of the manueline style architecture. Located at Belem, classified world heritage, is definitelly a must see. Beautiful church, cloisters and inner garden. There are also the tombs of some prominent Portuguese, such as Camões and Vasco da Gama.

It's a sight to behold both inside and out. Walking distance from the Monumento a los Descubrimientos and Torre de Belem, you can come here to see Vasco da Gama's tomb after seeing where Portugal's exploratory ships launched. Just a little farther down the street, you can drop into Pasteis de Belem for some custard tarts and hot chocolate!

Founded in 1501, this magnificent Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos) in Lisbon is a great monument to the Age of Discovery and a magnificent example of the Manueline style of architecture. The monastery was founded by King Manuel I in celebration of - and funded by - successful Portuguese voyages around the world.

One of the main samples of the Manueline Style is this construction, the "Mosteiro dos Jeronimos". This monastery celebrates the age of the discoveries. Inside the building you’ll find the Navy museum (Museu de Marinha)
