Manueline variety of architecture with hints of Moorish influence present in the balconies and arched windows. Explore the fascinating sights on each of the four floors, from the vaulted cistern on the ground story to the elaborate terrace that adorns the highest floor. Descend into the dungeon to discover the cells that used to house prisoners, and climb the spiral staircase to the top of the tower for a commanding view of the surrounding area.

This was a hit with our friends and family to visit Torre de Belem. Today the weather is good but later raining. So just took a picture and back to the bus.

The line to get into Torre de Belem took a ridiculous amount of time, as did every step along the way once inside. And overall, the experience wasn't nearly as thrilling as it seemed like it was going to be, especially for something so out of the way to get to (and it is out of the way from the main part of the city). Architecturally, it's pretty cool to look at, but you can see it from the water, from the ground, from several other places, and it's almost more interesting and rewarding to view it that way than to spend the time and effort waiting in endless lines to get to the roof.

Belém Tower (Portuguese: Torre de Belém, or the Tower of St Vincent) is a fortified tower located in the civil parish of Santa Maria de Belém in the municipality of Lisbon, Portugal. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (along with the nearby Jerónimos Monastery)because of the significant role it played in the Portuguese maritime discoveries of the era of the Age of Discoveries.

I didn't go inside, but it's still Nice from The outside and it's close to a bunch of museums, â monastery and restaurants. So it's still Nice to go see.

Just like the monastery there are huge queues (and no shade) at this place, which is bizarre when you consider that the best place to see it is from outside looking in. Architecturally impressive with some interesting artefacts and exhibits, if you have the time to queue its worth a look.

Beautiful architecture to view in this old defense post. Be aware, there are a lot of stairs.

One of the iconic locations in Lisbon. About three miles west of downtown Lisbon this tower strikes a stunning pose as it juts out into the sea. Make sure to go all the way to the top for great views, ideally around sunset. Be prepared for a little bit of a line to go up and down the narrow staircase though!

A significant historic relic of Portugal's maritime discovery, and a beautiful monument. Belem Tower strikes an iconic image jutting into the sea, where visitors can admire the intricate carvings of the facade, or venture inside to admire the Moorish and European influence on the architecture and design.

yes the tower has history as it was built in the early 1500s, however my favourite part of the visit was the stunning vistas. the fortress does have beautiful architecture. coupled with its historical significance, it's no wonder the tower is a world heritage site.

A part of the UNESCO heritage site signifying the Manueline architecture style, the Belem Tower is a monument honoring the Portuguese discoverers. The tower's white facade is quite extraordinary, and a certain serenity is achieved by its extension into the Tagus river. It is only a short walk to the Padrão dos Descobrimentos monument along the banks of Tagus waterfront. The tower is closed on Mondays (free with Lisboa card)! Plan accordingly.

The tower was commissioned by King John II to be both part of a defense system at the mouth of the Tagus River and a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon. This Site played a significant role in the Portuguese Maritime ear of the Age of Discoveries. Gayle and I toured the Tower on a nice Sunny Lisboa day and the views are not to be missed.

Belém Tower is a fortified tower located in the parish of Santa Maria de Belém. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the significant role it played in the Portuguese maritime discoveries of the era of the Age of Discoveries. It was from the beach in Belém that Vasco da Gama set sail to discover the sea route to India. There were times that this tower is always being repaired so I was not able to take good photos. The good ones were from decades ago where the tower was not covered by nets.

I was definitely expecting more from this landmark...maybe it was the construction works happening in the area, maybe the long and definitely not convenient bus journey needed to reach it, but in the end I was not amazed by this tower. Nice and a must see, but definitely a bit disappointing.

Its on every tourist Guide as a place to go to.
Me as resident wouldn't think of it as a "must see", but I keep on going there for a walk by the river side. Its really a relaxing place to go to.
